Listen to this article

“And they shall make an ark of shittim wood: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof.”

This verse is part of the detailed instructions given to Moses by God on Mount Sinai regarding the construction of the tabernacle and its furnishings. The ark of the covenant was one of the most significant and sacred objects within the tabernacle, serving as a symbolic representation of God’s presence and His covenant with the Israelites.

Let’s break down this verse and explore its meaning:

  • “And they shall make an ark of shittim wood” – The ark was to be constructed from acacia wood, also known as shittim wood. This type of wood was durable and had the necessary qualities to withstand the wilderness conditions during the Israelites’ journey.
  • “Two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof” – The dimensions provided for the ark were specific. It was to be 2.5 cubits in length (approximately 45 inches or 114 centimeters), 1.5 cubits in breadth (approximately 27 inches or 69 centimeters), and 1.5 cubits in height (approximately 27 inches or 69 centimeters). These dimensions indicate that the ark was relatively small, but it held great significance due to its purpose.

The ark of the covenant was not a mere storage container but a sacred object that symbolized the presence and holiness of God. Inside the ark, various items were placed, including the tablets of the Ten Commandments, a jar of manna, and Aaron’s rod. The ark was also covered with a golden mercy seat, where the presence of God would manifest itself in a special way.

The ark played a central role in the Israelites’ worship and their relationship with God. It accompanied them during their wilderness journey, representing God’s guidance, protection, and presence among them. It was eventually placed in the Most Holy Place of the tabernacle and later in the temple in Jerusalem.

Overall, Exodus 25:10 emphasizes the meticulous instructions given by God for the construction of the ark of the covenant. It highlights the specific dimensions and the material to be used, signifying the importance and sanctity of this sacred object within the worship and covenantal relationship between God and the Israelites.
