Exodus 25:2

Posted on 6 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And they shall take gold, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen.”

Exodus 25:2 is part of the instructions given by God to Moses on Mount Sinai regarding the construction of the tabernacle, which was a portable sanctuary that the Israelites carried with them during their journey in the wilderness. In this verse, God instructs the Israelites to contribute specific materials for the construction of the tabernacle.

Gold:Gold was highly valued and regarded as a precious metal during biblical times. It symbolises wealth, beauty, and purity. The Israelites were instructed to offer gold for various items in the tabernacle, including the ark of the covenant, the mercy seat, and the golden utensils used in worship.

Blue:The colour blue is mentioned several times in the Bible and often carries symbolic significance. In the context of the tabernacle, blue was used for the curtains and coverings. It represents heavenly or divine qualities and points to the transcendence of God.

Purple:Purple was a colour associated with royalty and luxury in ancient times. It was made from a rare and expensive dye extracted from certain mollusks. In the tabernacle, purple was used for the curtains and coverings, symbolising the majesty and kingship of God.

Scarlet:Scarlet, a bright red colour, was often associated with vitality, passion, and sacrifice. It was obtained from a particular insect or plant. Scarlet was used for the curtains and coverings of the tabernacle, signifying the sacrificial nature of worship and foreshadowing the bloodshed required for redemption.

Fine Linen:Linen was a fabric made from flax and was highly valued in the ancient world. Fine linen was used for priestly garments, such as the ephod and the breastplate. It symbolises purity, righteousness, and the priesthood.

In this verse, we see that God called upon the Israelites to contribute these specific materials for the construction of the tabernacle. These materials were not chosen arbitrarily but carried symbolic meaning, representing various aspects of God’s character and the worship of His people.

It is important to note that the specific materials mentioned in Exodus 25:2 were for the construction of the tabernacle in the Old Testament. As Christians, we understand that the tabernacle and its various elements foreshadowed the coming of Jesus Christ and His work of redemption. Therefore, while the specific instructions regarding the materials may not be directly applicable to us today, we can still learn from the symbolism and spiritual principles they represent.
