Listen to this article

“Three bowls made like unto almonds, with a knop and a flower in one branch; and three bowls made like almonds in the other branch, with a knop and a flower: so in the six branches that come out of the candlestick.”

Context:Exodus 25 marks the beginning of God’s instructions to Moses regarding the construction of the Tabernacle and its furnishings. In this chapter, God provides detailed instructions for the construction of the Ark of the Covenant, the Table of Showbread, and the Golden Lampstand (candlestick). The verse in question is part of the description of the Golden Lampstand.

Symbolism of the Golden Lampstand:The Golden Lampstand, also known as the Menorah, was an important piece of furniture in the Tabernacle and later in the Temple. It had a central shaft with six branches, each adorned with three almond-shaped bowls, along with decorative knobs and flowers. The lampstand held seven oil lamps that were to be kept burning continually in the Tabernacle.

Symbolic Meanings:

  • Light: The Golden Lampstand symbolized the light of God’s presence. The lamps were to be kept burning continuously, representing the perpetual presence and guidance of God among His people. It reminds us that God is the source of spiritual illumination and understanding.
  • Almond-Shaped Bowls: The almond shape of the bowls is significant. In Hebrew, the word for almond sounds similar to the word for “watching” or “hastening.” Almonds were one of the first trees to bloom in the spring, signifying God’s ability to act swiftly and watch over His people. The bowls served as vessels to hold the olive oil used to fuel the lamps.
  • Knops and Flowers: The decorative knobs and flowers on the branches symbolize the beauty and craftsmanship of the lampstand. They represent the idea of fruitfulness, growth, and the flourishing of God’s people in His presence. It reminds us that God desires His people to be adorned with spiritual beauty and to bear fruit in their lives.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • God’s Guidance:The perpetual burning lamps remind us that God is always present to guide and lead His people. As believers, we are called to walk in the light of God’s Word and follow His guidance in our lives.
  • Swiftness and Vigilance:The almond-shaped bowls remind us of God’s watchfulness and ability to act swiftly on behalf of His people. It encourages us to be alert, watchful, and responsive to God’s promptings in our lives.
  • Fruitfulness and Beauty:The knops and flowers symbolize the spiritual fruitfulness and beauty that should be evident in the lives of God’s people. It challenges us to grow in our relationship with God, bear the fruit of the Spirit, and reflect His character in our interactions with others.

In summary, Exodus 25:33 describes the design of the Golden Lampstand in the Tabernacle. The almond-shaped bowls, decorative knobs, and flowers carry symbolic meanings of God’s presence, guidance, swiftness, vigilance, fruitfulness, and beauty. As we reflect on this verse, may we be reminded of the importance of walking in God’s light, being watchful, and growing in our relationship with Him, while bearing fruit and reflecting His beauty in our lives.
