Exodus 25:38

Posted on 6 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And the tongs thereof, and the snuffdishes thereof, shall be of pure gold.”

Context and Background:Exodus 25 contains detailed instructions from God to Moses about building the Tabernacle and its furnishings. Verses 31–40 describe the golden lampstand, or menorah, which was to be crafted carefully and placed in the Holy Place.

Verse 38 specifically mentions the tools associated with the lampstand — the tongs and snuffdishes — and mandates that they be made of pure gold, just like the lampstand itself.

Verse Explanation:

  • Tongs:These were tools used by the priests to handle the burning wicks or lamps safely without damaging the lampstand or burning themselves.
  • Snuffdishes:Also called “snuffers,” these were used to catch or remove the burnt wick ends or any excess oil from the lamps, ensuring cleanliness and proper function.

The fact that both the tongs and snuffdishes were to be made of pure gold demonstrates the sacredness and reverence required for everything associated with worship in the Tabernacle.

Symbolism and Significance:

  • Holiness in Every Detail:
God commands that not just the lampstand, but also its accessories, be made of pure gold — a precious, pure metal. This teaches us that every part of worship, even the smallest tools, must be holy and set apart for God.
  • Purity and Excellence:
Gold symbolizes purity, value, and excellence. The tools being gold show that worship must be approached with utmost respect and purity.
  • Sacred Service:
The priests’ use of golden tools emphasizes that ministry and service to God require holiness and careful stewardship.

Summary:Exodus 25:38 highlights that the tongs and snuffdishes used with the golden lampstand must be made of pure gold. This detail reveals God’s high standards for holiness, purity, and excellence in worship. It reminds believers that all aspects of service to God—big or small—are sacred and must reflect reverence and dedication.
