Exodus 26:2

Posted on 6 August 2023
Listen to this article

"The length of one curtain shall be eight and twenty cubits, and the breadth of one curtain four cubits: and every one of the curtains shall have one measure."

In this verse, we find a detailed instruction given by God to Moses regarding the construction of the tabernacle, which was the portable sanctuary that the Israelites carried with them during their journey in the wilderness.

Measurement and Dimensions:The verse specifies that each curtain used to make the tabernacle should be 28 cubits long and 4 cubits wide. A cubit is an ancient unit of measurement, roughly equal to the length from a person’s elbow to the tip of their fingers. Therefore, the length of each curtain would be approximately 42 feet (28 cubits x 1.5 feet per cubit) and the width would be around 6 feet (4 cubits x 1.5 feet per cubit).

Symbolism and Significance:The dimensions and measurements mentioned here hold symbolic meaning and carry theological significance. The tabernacle was designed to be a dwelling place for God’s presence among the Israelites. The careful adherence to specific measurements highlights the precision and attention to detail required to honor and worship God.

Unity and Consistency:The verse concludes by stating that “every one of the curtains shall have one measure.” This emphasizes the importance of uniformity and consistency in the construction of the tabernacle. Each curtain was to be of the same size, ensuring that when they were joined together, they would create a unified and cohesive structure. This unity reflects the unity of the people of Israel as they gathered to worship and seek God’s presence.

Application:While Exodus 26:2 speaks directly about the tabernacle’s construction, there are some applications we can draw from this verse for our lives today. Firstly, it reminds us of the significance of paying attention to the details when it comes to worshiping and serving God. Just as God required precision in the construction of the tabernacle, He desires our wholehearted devotion and obedience.

Secondly, the emphasis on unity and consistency encourages us to pursue unity within the body of Christ. We are called to work together in harmony, respecting and valuing one another’s contributions, and allowing God’s presence to be evident among us.

Finally, the specific measurements mentioned in the verse remind us that God is a God of order and purpose. He is not a God of chaos but rather a God who works with precision and intention. As we seek to follow Him, let us trust in His plans and align our lives with His purposes.

That concludes our Bible study on Exodus 26:2. May we be inspired to worship and serve God with the same attention to detail and devotion as the Israelites demonstrated in constructing the tabernacle.
