Listen to this article

“And for the gate of the court shall be an hanging of twenty cubits, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, wrought with needlework: and their pillars shall be four, and their sockets four.”

Context:The book of Exodus describes the events surrounding the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and their journey to the Promised Land. In this particular verse, God provides instructions to Moses regarding the construction of the tabernacle and its furnishings.

The Court Gate:Exodus 27:16 specifically focuses on the gate of the court of the tabernacle. The tabernacle was a portable sanctuary where the Israelites worshiped God during their wilderness journey. The court was the outer area of the tabernacle, and it was enclosed by a curtain or hanging.

Symbolism of Colors:The hanging for the gate of the court was to be made of blue, purple, and scarlet materials, along with fine twined linen. These colors have symbolic significance in the Bible. Blue represents heavenly or divine qualities, such as the majesty and glory of God. Purple signifies royalty and represents the kingship and authority of God. Scarlet is associated with blood and can symbolize sacrifice, redemption, and atonement. The fine twined linen represents purity and righteousness.

Needlework:The hanging for the gate was to be wrought with needlework. This indicates that it was to be carefully crafted and decorated with intricate designs. The attention to detail and craftsmanship reflects the Israelites’ reverence for God and their desire to honor Him through their offerings.

Pillars and Sockets:The gate was to be supported by four pillars and four sockets. The pillars provided stability and structure to the gate. The sockets served as the foundation or base upon which the pillars were set. This ensures that the gate would be firmly anchored and able to withstand external forces.
