Exodus 28:10

Listen to this article

“And six of their names on one stone, and the other six names of the rest on the other stone, according to their birth.”

Context:Exodus 28 is a chapter that provides detailed instructions to Moses regarding the garments of the high priest and the priests who serve in the tabernacle. These garments were to be made with great care and precision, as they held symbolic significance and represented the holiness and distinction of those who wore them. In verse 10, God instructs the crafting of the breastplate for the high priest’s ephod. This breastplate would contain twelve precious stones, each representing one of the twelve tribes of Israel.

Interpretation and Key Points:

Breastplate and the High Priest:The breastplate was a significant part of the high priest’s attire. It was a square piece of cloth folded double, about nine inches square. It was fastened to the ephod and placed over the high priest’s heart, serving as a symbolic reminder that he carried the twelve tribes of Israel on his heart when he entered the Holy Place.

Stones and Tribe Representations:Each of the twelve precious stones on the breastplate was engraved with the name of one of the tribes of Israel. Six of the tribes’ names were engraved on one stone, and the other six tribes’ names were engraved on the other stone. The specific order of the tribes on the stones corresponded to their birthright.

Importance of Birthright:The positioning of the tribes on the stones according to their birthright was significant. The birthright determined the inheritance and blessings within the family. Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, and Naphtali were born to Leah and Bilhah and were engraved on one stone, while Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and Benjamin, born to Zilpah and Rachel, were engraved on the other stone.

Symbolism of the Breastplate:The breastplate’s purpose was not merely decorative; it had a spiritual function. It symbolized the high priest’s role as the mediator between God and the people of Israel. The engraved names of the tribes represented the unity and oneness of the entire nation in the eyes of God. When the high priest entered the Holy Place, he carried the collective burden, cares, and intercession for the people of Israel.

Application:While the specific practice of the high priest wearing a breastplate with engraved stones may not directly apply to us today, the principles behind it remain relevant. We can learn about the importance of spiritual leadership, intercession for others, and the significance of unity within the body of believers.

Importance of Carrying Others in Our Hearts:As followers of Christ, we are called to carry others in our hearts, praying for them, interceding on their behalf, and caring for their needs. Just as the high priest carried the names of the tribes, we should carry one another in love and unity.

Understanding Our Priestly Role:In the New Testament, all believers are considered part of a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9). As priests, we have the privilege and responsibility of coming before God in prayer and representing others to Him. The imagery of the breastplate can remind us of this vital aspect of our faith.

As we study Exodus 28:10, let us seek to apply the principles of spiritual leadership, intercession, unity, and carrying one another in love as we live out our faith in Christ.
