Exodus 28:35

Listen to this article

“And it shall be upon Aaron to minister: and his sound shall be heard when he goeth in unto the holy place before the LORD, and when he cometh out, that he die not.”

Context:Exodus 28 provides detailed instructions for the garments to be worn by the high priest and his sons as they serve in the tabernacle before the Lord. This specific verse focuses on the significance of one particular accessory: the “robe of the ephod” which was worn by the high priest, Aaron.

Key Points:

  • Ministering before the Lord:The primary purpose of the high priest’s attire, including the robe with its bells and pomegranates, was to serve and minister in the presence of the Lord. This signifies the priestly role and the importance of approaching God with reverence and holiness.

The Sound of the Bells:The bells on the hem of the robe were to be heard as Aaron entered the Holy Place and when he came out. The sound of the bells served as a reminder of his presence before the Lord. It also signified his obedience to the Lord’s commands as he ministered in the sanctuary. The tinkling of the bells may have also served to announce his entry and exit to others present in the tabernacle.

Symbolism of the Pomegranates:The pomegranates on the hem of the robe were made of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, symbolizing beauty, royalty, and sacrifice. The pomegranate itself was a fruit associated with abundance and fertility, and it often carried symbolic significance in the Bible. The pomegranates may have served as a visual reminder of God’s fruitful promises to His people and the abundant blessings received through faithful service.

Importance of Obedience:The verse concludes with the phrase “that he die not.” This emphasizes the importance of following God’s instructions precisely in matters of worship and service. It serves as a solemn warning that improper or irreverent approaches to God’s presence can lead to serious consequences. The high priest had to be obedient and faithful in his ministry to avoid facing God’s judgment.

Spiritual Applications:

  • Holiness and Reverence:As believers, we are called to approach God with reverence, just as the high priest did when ministering in the tabernacle. We should remember that our worship and service to God are not to be taken lightly, and we must maintain a holy and respectful attitude in His presence.
  • Obedience to God’s Word:The high priest’s obedience to the specific instructions regarding his attire is a reminder of the importance of following God’s Word in our lives. As we seek to serve God, we must be faithful in obeying His commands and seeking His guidance.
  • The Beauty of Service:The pomegranates on the high priest’s robe symbolize the beauty of faithful service. Our service to God and others can be a beautiful expression of His love and grace. When we serve with the right motives and in obedience to His will, our actions can bring blessings and abundance to those around us.
  • Warning against Presumption:The warning in the verse reminds us not to take God’s presence and service lightly. We should avoid presumptuous actions and attitudes in our worship and approach God with humility and sincerity.

In summary, Exodus 28:35 teaches us about the significance of the high priest’s robe with its bells and pomegranates, emphasizing the importance of ministering with holiness, obedience, and reverence before the Lord. As we study this passage, we can apply its principles to our lives as we seek to serve and worship God in a manner that pleases Him.
