Exodus 29:38

Listen to this article

“Now this is that which thou shalt offer upon the altar; two lambs of the first year, day by day continually.”

Context:The book of Exodus is the second book of the Bible and recounts the historical events of the Israelites’ liberation from slavery in Egypt and their journey to Mount Sinai. In this specific chapter, God instructs Moses on how to consecrate Aaron and his sons as priests to serve in the tabernacle, which was a mobile worship centre for the Israelites during their time in the wilderness.

Verse Analysis:

  • “Now this is that which thou shalt offer upon the altar…”: This verse begins with God addressing Moses, instructing him on the daily offering to be presented upon the altar. The altar mentioned here refers to the bronze altar, which was part of the tabernacle’s courtyard. It was used for various offerings and sacrifices.
  • “…two lambs of the first year, day by day continually.”: The offering mentioned consists of two lambs that are one year old each. These lambs were to be offered on the altar every single day without interruption, signifying a perpetual and continual offering. This daily sacrifice was part of the regular worship rituals ordained by God for the Israelites.

Spiritual Significance:

  • Atonement and Sin Offering:The daily offering of the two lambs symbolised the continuous need for atonement and forgiveness of sins. The shedding of the lambs’ blood represented the seriousness of sin and the need for an innocent substitute to bear the consequences of transgressions. This foreshadowed the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, who would later offer Himself as the perfect and final atonement for humanity’s sins.
  • Obedience and Devotion:The fact that the offering was to be presented daily demonstrates the importance of consistent obedience and devotion in the life of a believer. It teaches us the value of daily seeking God and offering our lives as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1).
  • God’s Holiness and Perfection:The regularity and precision of the daily sacrifice emphasise the holiness and perfection of God. He requires and deserves continual worship, honour, and praise. This encourages us to cultivate a lifestyle of worship and reverence for God in everything we do.

Application:

  • Prayer and Devotion:As believers, we can learn from this passage to incorporate daily prayer and devotion into our lives. Just as the lambs were offered daily, we should seek communion with God through prayer, reading His Word, and meditating on His precepts regularly.
  • Constant Atonement:The daily offering serves as a reminder of our need for continuous forgiveness and cleansing from sin. We can take comfort in the assurance that Jesus’ sacrifice has provided eternal atonement for us, but we must also remain vigilant in confessing our sins and seeking His forgiveness.
  • Consistent Worship:We are encouraged to offer our lives as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1), presenting ourselves to God daily in worship and service. Our devotion to Him should not be limited to specific occasions or moments but should be an ongoing lifestyle of worship.

In conclusion, Exodus 29:38 teaches us about the significance of daily offerings on the altar and the spiritual truths that can be applied to our lives. It points to the need for constant atonement, obedience, and devotion to God in our daily walk with Him.
