Exodus 31:4

Posted on 4 May 2025
Listen to this article

“To devise cunning works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass.”

Context:To fully understand this verse, it’s essential to grasp the context in which it appears. The book of Exodus details the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land and their encounter with God at Mount Sinai. During their time at Mount Sinai, God revealed the Ten Commandments and various laws to Moses. In chapters 25 to 31, God gives specific instructions on how to build the tabernacle, which would serve as a dwelling place for His presence among the people.

Skilled Workers:In Exodus 31:1-5, God appoints two men, Bezalel and Aholiab, and fills them with the Holy Spirit, wisdom, understanding, and knowledge in all kinds of craftsmanship. These men were to lead and supervise the construction of the tabernacle and all its components. In verse 4, God specifies the skills these craftsmen will possess.

Devising Cunning Works:The phrase “to devise cunning works” indicates that Bezalel and Aholiab were given the ability to create skillfully designed and intricate works. They were not just ordinary craftsmen; they were divinely gifted artisans who would be able to plan and execute complex and beautiful works of art.

Working in Gold, Silver, and Brass:God mentions specific materials used in the construction of the tabernacle. These precious metals were considered valuable and were used to fashion various items such as the Ark of the Covenant, the Table of Showbread, the Lampstand (Menorah), and the Altar of Incense, among others. These items held significant spiritual symbolism and were essential in the worship and sacrificial practices of the Israelites.

Divine Gifting:God bestows unique gifts and talents upon individuals to fulfill His purposes. Bezalel and Aholiab were chosen and filled with the Holy Spirit to carry out a specific task. This teaches us that God equips those whom He calls, and He enables them to excel in their appointed responsibilities.

Excellence in Service:The skills of Bezalel and Aholiab were not merely for personal gain; they were to use their talents to honor God and contribute to the construction of the tabernacle-a place for God’s presence. As Christians, we should also use our talents and abilities to serve God and His kingdom with excellence.

Attention to Detail:Crafting the components of the tabernacle required precision and attention to detail. Likewise, as followers of Christ, we are called to live with integrity and care in all aspects of our lives, reflecting God’s character through our actions.

Unity in Diversity:The construction of the tabernacle involved the collaboration of various skilled workers, each contributing their unique abilities. In the body of Christ, we are all different, with diverse gifts and callings, but we are united in our purpose to glorify God and build His kingdom.

In conclusion, Exodus 31:4 emphasizes the divine empowerment of Bezalel and Aholiab to create intricate and beautiful works in precious metals for the construction of the tabernacle. It reminds us of God’s providence in gifting individuals for specific tasks and challenges us to use our talents and abilities to honor God and serve His purposes.
