Exodus 32:28

Listen to this article

“And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.”

Context:In this passage, we find ourselves in the book of Exodus, which is the second book of the Bible. It tells the story of the Israelites’ journey from slavery in Egypt to the Promised Land under the leadership of Moses. This particular chapter deals with a significant event known as the Golden Calf incident.

Earlier in Exodus 32, the Israelites grew impatient while Moses was receiving the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai. They asked Aaron, Moses’ brother and the acting leader in his absence, to make gods for them. Aaron succumbed to their pressure and crafted a golden calf, and the people began to worship it, breaking the first two commandments.

When Moses came down from the mountain and saw the people engaging in idolatry and revelry, he was furious. He shattered the tablets containing the Ten Commandments, symbolizing the people’s broken covenant with God. Moses then confronted Aaron and demanded an explanation. Aaron tried to justify his actions, but the consequences of their sin were already set in motion.

  • “And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses…”: In response to the grave sin of the Israelites, Moses called for those who were on the Lord’s side to come to him (Exodus 32:26). The Levites, who belonged to the tribe of Levi, showed their allegiance to the Lord and answered Moses’ call. They were chosen by God to serve as priests for Israel, and here we see their devotion to God’s commands through Moses.
  • “and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.”: The phrase “there fell” indicates that judgment was executed upon the idolaters among the Israelites. The Levites, acting on God’s command through Moses, became instruments of God’s justice. Unfortunately, about three thousand men lost their lives that day as a result of their rebellion and disobedience.

Lessons and Application:

  • The Severity of Sin:The incident of the Golden Calf reminds us of the seriousness of sin in God’s eyes. Idolatry is a direct violation of God’s commands, and it led to severe consequences for the Israelites. It’s a sobering reminder that our actions have consequences, and we should be vigilant in avoiding anything that takes precedence over God in our lives.
  • The Importance of Obedience:The Levites’ obedience to Moses’ command illustrates the significance of following God’s instructions. As believers, we should prioritise obeying God’s Word, even when it’s difficult or goes against the prevailing culture or peer pressure.
  • God’s Mercy and Justice:Although the judgment was severe, it’s essential to remember that God is both merciful and just. The consequences of sin should not be taken lightly, but God also provides forgiveness and redemption through Jesus Christ.
  • The Role of Leadership:The incident highlights the role of leadership in guiding God’s people. Aaron’s failure to stand firm against the people’s demands had devastating consequences. As leaders or individuals with influence, we should prioritise faithfulness to God’s Word and resist compromising our beliefs.
  • Interceding for Others:Moses’ intercession for the people is seen both before and after this event. His prayers demonstrate the power of interceding on behalf of others. As believers, we are called to pray for one another, seeking God’s mercy and grace in times of need.

In conclusion, Exodus 32:28 teaches us essential lessons about the consequences of sin, the significance of obedience, and the need for faithful leadership. It also reminds us of God’s mercy and justice, and the power of intercessory prayer. May we learn from the mistakes of the Israelites and seek to live in obedience and faithfulness to God’s commands.
