Exodus 32:9

Posted on 5 May 2025
Listen to this article

“And the Lord said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people.”

Context:In this passage, we find the events taking place at Mount Sinai shortly after the Israelites had been delivered from slavery in Egypt. Moses had gone up the mountain to receive the Ten Commandments and other instructions from God. However, the people grew impatient during Moses’ absence and turned to idolatry. They persuaded Aaron, Moses’ brother and the High Priest, to make them a golden calf to worship as their god.

God’s Omniscience:The verse begins with God expressing that He has seen the people’s actions. This highlights the omniscience of God, meaning He knows everything, including the actions and intentions of His people. Despite being on the mountain, Moses’ distance didn’t hinder God’s awareness of what was happening with the Israelites.

Stiffnecked People:God describes the people as “stiffnecked.” This term suggests that the Israelites were stubborn, obstinate, and resistant to following God’s commands. The imagery of a stiff neck implies an unwillingness to bow down, submit, or turn in the right direction. This characterization indicates their rebellious nature and lack of willingness to obey God.

Human Free Will and Accountability:Although God knew the Israelites’ actions and their stubbornness, it’s essential to note that they were still exercising their free will. God had given them the freedom to choose, but their choices had consequences. This highlights the principle of human accountability for our actions and decisions.

God’s Mercy and Moses’ Intercession:The context of this verse also shows God’s response to the Israelites’ sin. He was ready to bring judgment upon them for their idolatry, but Moses intervened on their behalf. This incident demonstrates God’s mercy and the significance of intercessory prayer. Moses, as the mediator between God and the people, pleaded for their forgiveness and God’s relenting wrath.

Application of the Message:As we reflect on this verse and the surrounding context, we can draw some practical lessons for our lives. First, we should remember that God is aware of everything we do, and our actions matter to Him. Second, we must guard against stubbornness and rebellion, being open and obedient to God’s commands. Third, when we fall into sin, we can approach God with repentance, seeking His forgiveness and the intercession of Jesus Christ, our ultimate mediator.

In conclusion, Exodus 32:9 presents a significant moment in the relationship between God, Moses, and the Israelites. It highlights God’s knowledge of our actions, the dangers of stubbornness and rebellion, and the importance of seeking God’s mercy through intercessory prayer. As we study this passage, let us be mindful of our own actions and attitudes, seeking to be humble and obedient before God, and relying on the grace and intercession provided by Jesus Christ.
