“And Moses said unto the Lord, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight.”
Context:In the preceding chapters, the Israelites had committed the grave sin of idolatry by worshipping a golden calf while Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments from God. As a result of this disobedience, God’s anger burned against the people, and He threatened to consume them in His wrath.
Moses interceded on behalf of the people, pleading with God not to destroy them entirely. In response to Moses’ prayer, God relented from destroying the Israelites entirely but still stated that He would not go up with them into the Promised Land because of their stiff-neckedness, lest He consume them on the way (Exodus 33:1-3).
Moses’ Relationship with God:In this verse, we see Moses engaging in a conversation with God. Their relationship is personal and intimate, as indicated by God knowing Moses by name and finding grace in Moses’ sight. This highlights the profound level of familiarity and communication between Moses and God. As believers, we can learn the importance of developing an intimate relationship with God through prayer, worship, and obedience.
- Moses’s Boldness in Prayer:Moses expresses his concerns to God without hesitation. He questions God about whom He will send with the people. This shows Moses’ boldness in prayer and his desire to understand God’s plan for the journey ahead. As Christians, we can learn to come before God with our questions, doubts, and fears, knowing that He welcomes our honesty and is willing to guide us through life’s uncertainties.
- God’s Faithfulness and Grace:Despite the Israelites’ rebellion and unfaithfulness, God extends His grace to Moses and the people. God acknowledges that He knows Moses by name and has found grace in his sight. Even though God initially said He wouldn’t go up with the Israelites, His grace allows Him to continue leading and guiding them, albeit through an angel (Exodus 33:2-3). This demonstrates God’s loving and patient nature. We can take comfort in knowing that God’s grace is available to us, no matter how many times we may falter or stumble.

He recognises the importance of having God accompany them on their journey through the wilderness and into the Promised Land. They should recognise the significance of God’s presence in their endeavours and prioritise cultivating an intimate relationship with Him. Leadership is not merely about making decisions but also about seeking God’s wisdom and direction in every step.
