Exodus 33:14

Listen to this article

“And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.”

Context:The book of Exodus is part of the Old Testament and records the events surrounding the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt under the leadership of Moses. In Exodus 33, we find the account of Moses’ intimate encounter with God in the Tent of Meeting. Moses, who had a deep relationship with God, had interceded for the Israelites after their sin with the golden calf. He desired God’s assurance and guidance for the journey ahead, particularly as they prepared to enter the Promised Land.

  • The Promise of God’s Presence: In this verse, God responds to Moses’ plea for guidance by promising His presence. “My presence shall go with thee.” The presence of God is a significant theme throughout the Bible. It signifies God’s intimate involvement in the lives of His people, offering them guidance, comfort, and protection. God’s presence is not just a theological concept but a tangible reality that brings assurance and strength to those who walk with Him.
  • The Importance of God’s Presence: Moses recognised the value of God’s presence. He knew that without God’s guidance and favour, the journey through the wilderness and into the Promised Land would be fraught with challenges and dangers. The presence of God makes all the difference in our lives. It brings peace, strength, and the wisdom we need to navigate through life’s difficulties.
  • Rest in God’s Presence: God’s promise doesn’t end with His presence; He also promises, “I will give thee rest.” Rest here goes beyond physical rest; it encompasses emotional, spiritual, and mental tranquillity. In the midst of life’s uncertainties and struggles, we find rest in God’s presence. This rest is a result of trusting God completely, knowing that He is in control and has our best interests at heart.
  • Application for Our Lives: Exodus 33:14 is not just a historical account but a timeless promise for all believers. As followers of Christ, we too can experience God’s presence and rest in our lives:
    • – Seek God’s Presence: Just as Moses sought God’s presence, we should prioritise spending time with God through prayer, studying His Word, and seeking His guidance in our decisions.
    • – Trust in God’s Promise: God’s promise of His presence and rest is steadfast. Even in challenging times, we can rely on God’s faithfulness, knowing that He will never leave nor forsake us.
  • Find Rest in God: When we cast our burdens upon the Lord and trust in Him, we experience the peace and rest that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:6-7).
Obey and Follow God: Moses’ encounter with God was deeply rooted in his obedience and submission to God’s will. As we obey and follow God, we position ourselves to experience His presence more intimately.

In conclusion, Exodus 33:14 presents a powerful assurance of God’s presence and the rest He offers to those who seek Him and walk in obedience. As we apply this promise to our lives, we can experience the peace and strength that come from knowing that God is with us every step of the way.
