Exodus 33:5

Posted on 13 May 2025
Listen to this article

“For the LORD had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people: I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee.”

Context:The book of Exodus is part of the Old Testament and narrates the story of the Israelites’ deliverance from slavery in Egypt and their journey toward the Promised Land. In chapter 32, we see the account of the golden calf incident where the Israelites, in Moses’ absence, made a golden calf to worship, breaking their covenant with God and engaging in idolatry. This grievous sin angered God, and He threatened to destroy the Israelites.

God’s Holiness and Righteousness:In Exodus 33:5, we witness God’s holiness and righteousness. The incident of the golden calf revealed the rebellion and disobedience of the Israelites, which caused God to call them a “stiff-necked people.” God’s nature is holy and righteous, and He cannot tolerate sin. This verse serves as a reminder that God demands obedience and faithfulness from His people.

God’s Desire for Relationship:Despite the Israelites’ sin, God’s desire to be in a relationship with them is evident. He declares that He will come up into their midst. This shows God’s willingness to engage with His people, even in their sinful state. God’s love for us is unconditional, and He is always ready to meet us where we are.

The Importance of Repentance:God commands the Israelites to put off their ornaments as a symbol of repentance and humility. Repentance is crucial for restoration and reconciliation with God. It involves acknowledging our sins, turning away from them, and seeking God’s forgiveness. In this context, it signifies the need for the Israelites to repent and turn back to God after their idolatrous actions.

Seeking God’s Guidance:The latter part of the verse highlights Moses’ role as a mediator between God and the people. God instructs Moses to convey to the children of Israel the need to remove their ornaments. This was to help God decide what to do with them in light of their disobedience. Seeking God’s guidance and wisdom is essential in times of confusion or crisis, and Moses’ role as an intercessor teaches us the importance of prayer and seeking God’s will.

Application:

  • Acknowledge God’s holiness and righteousness, and strive to live a life that pleases Him.
  • Recognise the significance of repentance in maintaining a healthy relationship with God. Whenever we sin, we should humbly seek God’s forgiveness and turn away from our sinful ways.
  • Embrace God’s desire to be in a relationship with us. Despite our flaws and failures, God’s love remains constant.
  • When faced with challenging situations, remember the importance of seeking God’s guidance through prayer and studying His Word.
  • As believers, we are called to be mediators and intercessors for others. Just as Moses stood in the gap for the Israelites, we should pray for others and intercede on their behalf before God.

In summary, Exodus 33:5 serves as a powerful reminder of God’s holiness, our need for repentance, and the importance of seeking God’s guidance in our lives. Through this verse, we can deepen our understanding of God’s character and His desire for a genuine relationship with His people.
