Exodus 34:25

Listen to this article

“Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven; neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the passover be left unto the morning.”

Context:Exodus 34 is a pivotal chapter in the Old Testament, where God renews the covenant with the Israelites after Moses intercedes for them following the incident of the golden calf. In the earlier chapters of Exodus, we see the Israelites’ journey out of Egypt, the giving of the Ten Commandments, and the construction of the tabernacle. In this chapter, God instructs Moses to chisel out new stone tablets after the first ones were broken due to the people’s disobedience.

Interpretation and Key Points:

Prohibition of Leaven:In this verse, God commands the Israelites not to offer the blood of sacrifices with leaven. Leaven is often used symbolically in the Bible to represent sin, corruption, and hypocrisy. Here, it reminds the people to come before God with pure hearts and sincerity, without the influence of sin in their offerings.

The Passover Sacrifice:The verse specifically mentions the “feast of the passover”, referring to the Passover celebration that commemorates the deliverance of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. God instructs that the Passover sacrifice should not be left until morning. In the original Passover event, recorded in Exodus 12, God commanded the Israelites to sacrifice a lamb and apply its blood to the doorposts of their houses to be spared from the plague of the firstborn. The Passover lamb was to be eaten that night, and whatever remained was to be burned. This command highlights the urgency and significance of the Passover sacrifice, and it also reminds the Israelites of God’s deliverance and faithfulness.

Spiritual Lessons:This verse holds important spiritual lessons for believers today. Firstly, it reminds us to approach God with sincerity and humility, confessing our sins and seeking forgiveness before presenting our offerings or worship. Just as the Israelites were instructed not to mix leaven (representing sin) with their sacrifices, we are to come before God with pure hearts, acknowledging our imperfections and dependence on Him.

The Importance of Obedience:Obedience to God’s specific instructions was crucial for the Israelites. This principle holds true for believers today. God desires our obedience, not as a means to earn His favour, but as a response to His love and grace. When we obey God’s commands, we demonstrate our trust in His wisdom and goodness.

The Symbolism of the Passover:The Passover lamb is a significant foreshadowing of Jesus Christ, who became the ultimate sacrificial Lamb for the forgiveness of our sins. Jesus’ blood, shed on the cross, cleanses us from sin and provides salvation for all who believe in Him. The Passover feast points forward to the redemption accomplished through Christ’s sacrifice and the deliverance from the slavery of sin.

Living in the Present:The command not to leave the Passover sacrifice until morning also serves as a reminder of living in the present and not procrastinating in matters of obedience and devotion to God. It encourages us to seize the opportunities we have now to serve and honour God, rather than postponing them for a later time.

In conclusion, Exodus 34:25 provides valuable insights into the proper approach to worship, the significance of obedience to God’s commands, the symbolism of the Passover, and the foreshadowing of Jesus Christ as the ultimate sacrifice. Through this verse, we are encouraged to come before God with sincerity, offer our worship and obedience wholeheartedly, and remember the redemption and salvation accomplished through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ.
