Exodus 34:7

Listen to this article

“Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.”

This verse is a part of the narrative where Moses is on Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments and the second set of stone tablets after breaking the first ones due to the Israelites’ idolatry with the golden calf.

Context:Let’s break down the verse and explore its deeper meanings in the context of the Bible: “Keeping mercy for thousands”: God is compassionate and merciful. He is willing to show mercy to thousands, indicating that His grace and forgiveness are abundant and not limited by the number of people who seek His forgiveness.

Forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin:This emphasizes God’s willingness to forgive sins of various kinds – whether they be unintentional (iniquity), deliberate acts of rebellion (transgression), or general wrongdoing (sin). God’s forgiveness is all‑encompassing and available to those who genuinely repent.

And that will by no means clear the guilty:Although God is merciful and forgiving, it is crucial to understand that He is also just. He cannot simply overlook sin without addressing its consequences. Sin has its repercussions, and God’s justice demands that the guilty be held accountable.

Visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation:This part of the verse has been a subject of much discussion and interpretation. It describes a concept known as “generational sin” or “generational curse”, where the consequences of one’s sinful actions can affect their descendants for several generations.

However, it is important to interpret this in light of other passages in the Bible. In Ezekiel 18:20, God explicitly states that each person is responsible for their actions, and children will not be punished for the sins of their parents. So, this verse in Exodus should be understood as a warning of the far‑reaching impact of sin and its potential consequences on future generations when people persist in unrepentant and sinful behaviour.

Overall, Exodus 34:7 presents a balance between God’s mercy and justice. He is merciful and willing to forgive, but He also upholds justice and holds people accountable for their actions. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking God’s forgiveness, repenting from sin, and living in a way that pleases Him, knowing that our actions can have lasting effects on those around us.
