Exodus 35:20

Listen to this article

“And all the congregation of the children of Israel departed from the presence of Moses.”

Exodus 35:20 is a relatively short verse that appears in the context of the instructions for building the tabernacle. To understand its significance, we need to look at the broader context of the chapter.

Context:In the preceding chapters (Exodus 25-31), God gives detailed instructions to Moses on how to build the tabernacle, a portable dwelling place for God’s presence among the Israelites. The tabernacle was to be a sacred place where God would meet with His people and where they could worship Him.

Chapter 35 starts with Moses assembling the entire congregation of Israel and reiterating the commandments regarding the Sabbath day (Exodus 35:1-3). Then, Moses encourages the people to contribute willingly and generously to the construction of the tabernacle and its furnishings (Exodus 35:4-19). This includes offerings of various materials such as gold, silver, bronze, fine fabrics, precious stones, and more.

Exodus 35:20 signifies the response of the children of Israel to Moses’ call for contributions. The verse states that “all the congregation of the children of Israel departed from the presence of Moses.” This means that after Moses had addressed the people and called for their contributions, they left the gathering to gather the necessary materials for the construction of the tabernacle.

Key Lessons from Exodus 35:20:

  • Obedience:The Israelites’ departure from Moses’ presence indicates their willingness to obey God’s commands through Moses. They took action promptly in response to the call for contributions, demonstrating their obedience to God’s instructions.
  • Willingness to Contribute:The people’s willingness to provide materials for the construction of the tabernacle shows their dedication to the worship of God and their desire to have a place for God’s presence among them.
  • Unity:The fact that “all the congregation” participated in this effort illustrates a sense of unity and community among the Israelites. They were working together towards a common purpose, putting aside any differences or personal agendas.

Faith in God’s Promise:The people’s enthusiasm in contributing materials also reflects their faith in God’s promises and His plan for them. They believed in the importance of the tabernacle and its role in their relationship with God.

Application:As we reflect on Exodus 35:20, we can draw several applications for our lives today:

  • Obedience and Action:Like the Israelites, we should be obedient to God’s commands and be prompt in taking action when He calls us to contribute to His kingdom’s work.
  • Willingness to Give:Just as the Israelites willingly gave their possessions for the tabernacle, we should be eager to give of our time, talents, and resources for the service of God and to support His work on Earth.
  • Unity and Community:Working together in unity with other believers enhances our ability to serve God effectively and accomplish His purposes.
  • Faith in God’s Plan:Trusting in God’s promises and having faith in His plan for our lives can motivate us to be actively involved in advancing His kingdom.

In summary, Exodus 35:20 reminds us of the importance of obedience, willingness to give, unity, and faith in our relationship with God. By applying these principles to our lives, we can honour God and play our part in fulfilling His purposes.
