Exodus 35:25

Posted on 27 May 2025
Listen to this article

“And all the women that were wise-hearted did spin with their hands, and brought that which they had spun, both of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, and of fine linen.”

Context:The book of Exodus is the second book of the Bible and primarily focuses on the deliverance of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and their journey to the Promised Land. In chapter 35, we find the Israelites at Mount Sinai, receiving instructions from God about the construction of the tabernacle, which was to be a place of worship and God’s dwelling among His people.

The People Involved:In this particular verse, the focus is on the “wise-hearted” women among the Israelites. These women were skilled and gifted in the art of spinning fibers and creating fabrics.

Wise-Hearted Women:The Bible mentions “wise-hearted” women who were willing to use their skills for the construction of the tabernacle. Their wisdom doesn’t necessarily refer to intellectual intelligence but rather to their wisdom in craftsmanship, which was a gift from God. This highlights the importance of using our God-given talents and abilities for His purposes and the building up of His kingdom.

Spinning and Offering:These skilled women used their spinning ability to create various fabrics in different colours: blue, purple, scarlet, and fine linen. These materials were essential for crafting the priestly garments and the intricate tapestries of the tabernacle. Their contributions were voluntary offerings, demonstrating their willing and joyful hearts to give back to God what He had blessed them with.

Symbolism of Colours:The colours mentioned in the verse hold symbolic significance. For example:

  • Blue: Symbolises the divine, heavenly, and heavenly revelations.
  • Purple: Represents royalty, honour, and majesty.
  • Scarlet: Signifies sacrifice, blood, and redemption.
  • Fine Linen: Represents purity, righteousness, and holiness.

Application:

  • Using Our Gifts:This passage encourages us to use our God-given skills and talents to contribute to the work of God’s kingdom. Just as the wise-hearted women offered their abilities for the construction of the tabernacle, we should be willing to offer our time, talents, and resources for God’s service and the betterment of others.
  • Joyful Giving:The women’s voluntary offering reflects the principle of joyful giving. When we give back to God and others with a cheerful and willing heart, it becomes an act of worship and deepens our relationship with Him.
  • Symbolism of Colours:Reflecting on the symbolic meanings of the colours used in the fabrics, we can meditate on the various aspects of God’s character, including His divinity, royalty, sacrifice, and purity. This can lead us to a deeper understanding and appreciation of who God is and what He has done for us.

In summary, Exodus 35:25 teaches us about the importance of using our gifts and skills for God’s purposes, the joy of giving back to God and others, and the symbolism found in the materials used for the construction of the tabernacle. It reminds us to approach our offerings and service with a willing and joyful heart, knowing that God blesses and honours those who serve Him with dedication and a spirit of excellence.
