Exodus 35:9

Posted on 27 May 2025
Listen to this article

“Two onyx stones, and four rows of stones, and the work of a cunning workman, and of the embroiderer, in blue, and in purple, and in scarlet, and in fine linen.”

Context:The book of Exodus is the second book of the Bible and is part of the Pentateuch, attributed to Moses. It recounts the historical events of the Israelites’ liberation from slavery in Egypt and their journey through the wilderness under Moses’ leadership. In this chapter, the Lord commands Moses to gather the people of Israel and instructs them regarding the construction of the tabernacle, which would serve as a sacred place of worship.

Building the Tabernacle:Exodus 35:9 is part of the instructions given by God to Moses for constructing the tabernacle. The tabernacle was a portable sanctuary, a tent, where God’s presence would dwell among His people during their journey in the wilderness. It was a central place for worship and sacrifices.

Onyx Stones and Precious Materials:The verse mentions specific materials required for the construction of the tabernacle. Two onyx stones were to be used for the ephod, a priestly garment worn by the high priest. These stones were to be engraved with the names of the twelve tribes of Israel, symbolising their representation before God.

Skilled Workers:God instructed that the work of building the tabernacle should be carried out by skilled and cunning craftsmen. It was important to have talented artisans who could work with precision and artistry to create the intricate and beautiful components of the tabernacle.

Significance of Colors:The verse mentions the colors blue, purple, scarlet, and fine linen. These colors were significant in the construction of various elements of the tabernacle, including the priestly garments and the curtains. Blue represents the heavenly nature of God, purple signifies royalty and majesty, and scarlet symbolises sacrifice and redemption.

Symbolism of the Tabernacle:The tabernacle was not merely a functional structure but held deep spiritual symbolism. It represented God’s desire to dwell among His people, signifying His presence in their midst. The various elements and rituals carried out in the tabernacle pointed to spiritual truths and foreshadowed the coming of Christ and the new covenant.

Application:

  • Skilled Service:Just as God called skilled workers to construct the tabernacle, we are reminded that God values excellence in the service of His kingdom. Whatever talents and skills we have, we should use them for the glory of God and the benefit of others.
  • God’s Presence:The tabernacle represented God’s presence among His people. Today, as believers, we are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). God dwells within us, and we should honour Him in our bodies and lives.
  • Spiritual Symbolism:The tabernacle’s symbolism points to the fulfilment in Christ. As Christians, we can study the Old Testament foreshadowing of Christ and see the deeper spiritual truths fulfilled in the New Testament.

In conclusion, Exodus 35:9 reminds us of the careful craftsmanship and the symbolic significance of the tabernacle. It also encourages us to offer our skills and talents in service to God and to recognise the spiritual truths hidden within the Old Testament, ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
