Exodus 36:17

Posted on 27 May 2025
Listen to this article

“And he made fifty loops upon the uttermost edge of the curtain in the coupling, and fifty loops made he upon the edge of the curtain which coupleth the second.”

Context:In the preceding chapters of Exodus, God had given detailed instructions to Moses regarding the construction of the Tabernacle and its various components. The Tabernacle consisted of several parts, including the outer court, the holy place, and the most holy place (the Holy of Holies). These sections were separated by curtains and coverings.

Exodus 36:8-13 (KJV) describes the construction of the curtains and coverings for the Tabernacle. These verses mention the making of the "curtains of fine twined linen" and the "curtains of goats’ hair." These curtains were strategically designed to be joined and hung around the Tabernacle to form the enclosure and provide a sacred space for worship and interaction with God.

Exodus 36:14-19 (KJV) gives specific details about the construction of the outermost covering, which was made of "rams’ skins dyed red" and a covering of "badgers’ skins" over that.

Exodus 36:17 (KJV) is a part of this description, focusing on the loops that were made on the edge of one set of curtains that were used to couple or connect with another set of curtains.

Meaning and Symbolism:The making of fifty loops on each curtain’s edge was significant for several reasons:

  • Connectivity and Unity:The loops allowed the curtains to be connected or coupled together, forming a seamless and unified structure for the Tabernacle. This illustrates the importance of unity and cohesion among God’s people. Just as the curtains were joined together, the Israelites were brought together as a single nation under God’s guidance and protection.
  • Precision and Attention to Detail:The fact that the number of loops was specified as fifty for each set of curtains indicates God’s attention to detail in the construction of the Tabernacle. God is a God of order, and this emphasizes the importance of precision and obedience in carrying out His instructions.
  • Accessibility to God:The Tabernacle served as a place where God’s presence would dwell among His people. The coupling of the curtains emphasizes that God desires to be accessible to His people. The loops allowed for the opening and closing of the curtains, signifying that through obedience and proper approach, the Israelites could draw near to God and experience His presence.
  • Symbol of Christ and the Church:In the New Testament, the Church is often referred to as the body of Christ. The curtains being coupled together can symbolize the unity of believers in Christ, forming a spiritual dwelling place for God’s presence (Ephesians 2:21-22).

Lessons to Learn:From Exodus 36:17, we can take away several valuable lessons for our spiritual lives:

  • Unity in the Church:Just as the curtains were joined together to form the Tabernacle, Christians should strive for unity and harmony in the Church. Unity strengthens the body of Christ and enhances our witness to the world (Psalm 133:1, 1 Corinthians 1:10).
  • Obedience and Attention to God’s Instructions:The precision with which the Tabernacle was constructed highlights the importance of obeying God’s Word and following His instructions diligently. God’s plans are perfect, and following them leads to a blessed and purposeful life.
  • Approaching God with Reverence:The concept of the Tabernacle teaches us about approaching God with reverence and awe. We can now approach God through Jesus Christ, who is the way, the truth, and the life (Hebrews 4:16, John 14:6).
  • God’s Desire to Dwell Among His People:The Tabernacle’s construction emphasizes God’s desire to be with His people and have a relationship with them. In the New Testament, we see this fulfilled in the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in believers (1 Corinthians 3:16).

In summary, Exodus 36:17 offers insights into the construction of the Tabernacle, its symbolism, and the spiritual lessons we can apply to our lives today. It emphasizes unity, obedience, and the importance of seeking God’s presence in our worship and daily living.
