Exodus 36:4

Listen to this article

“And all the wise men that wrought all the work of the sanctuary came every man from his work which they made;”

Context:The book of Exodus is the second book of the Bible and is part of the Pentateuch (the first five books). It follows the story of the Israelites’ journey from slavery in Egypt to their liberation and the establishment of their covenant with God. In Exodus 36, the focus is on the construction of the tabernacle, a portable place of worship that the Lord commanded Moses to build.

In Exodus 36:4, the verse highlights the skilled craftsmen, often referred to as “wise men,” who were responsible for creating and constructing the sanctuary, which includes the tabernacle and its various components.

Skilled Workers:The verse emphasizes that these workers were not just ordinary labourers but skilled artisans. Their abilities and craftsmanship were gifts from God. In Exodus 35:30-35, we find that God filled these individuals with His Spirit to give them wisdom, understanding, and knowledge to accomplish the intricate work needed for the tabernacle.

Unity and Cooperation:Notice that the wise men came “every man from his work” to gather together. This suggests a spirit of unity and cooperation among the workers. They were committed to their tasks, but they were also willing to leave their individual workstations to contribute to the greater purpose of building the sanctuary.

Dedication and Obedience:The willingness of the wise men to leave their own work to assist in the construction of the sanctuary demonstrates their dedication to God’s command and their obedience to the leadership of Moses and the tabernacle project.

Significance of the Sanctuary:The sanctuary, also known as the tabernacle, was a central place of worship for the Israelites during their journey in the wilderness. It served as a visible reminder of God’s presence among His people. The construction of the sanctuary was an essential task, and the dedication of the skilled workers was crucial to its completion.

Exodus 36:4 provides us with some valuable spiritual lessons that we can apply to our lives today:

  • Using Our Talents for God’s Work:Just as the wise men used their God-given talents and skills for the construction of the sanctuary, we should seek to use our own gifts and abilities to serve God and His purposes in the world. Whether it be through our professions, ministries, or daily interactions, we can glorify God by employing our talents to benefit others and further His kingdom.
  • Unity in the Church:The unity and cooperation displayed by the wise men are essential characteristics in the body of Christ. As members of the Church, we are called to work together harmoniously, supporting one another and pursuing the common goal of sharing the Gospel and building up God’s people.
  • Obedience to God’s Commands:The wise men’s obedience to God’s command to build the sanctuary is a reminder of our need to be obedient to God’s Word. Obedience demonstrates our trust in God’s wisdom and authority, and it leads to blessings and fulfilment in our lives.
  • Value of God’s Presence:The sanctuary was a symbol of God’s presence among His people. In our lives, we should cherish and seek God’s presence, recognizing that He is with us always, guiding and providing for us.

Conclusion:Exodus 36:4 showcases the skilled workers’ dedication and commitment to building the sanctuary, which was a significant aspect of Israel’s relationship with God. Through this verse, we are reminded of the importance of using our talents for God’s work, maintaining unity in the Church, obeying God’s commands, and recognizing the value of God’s presence in our lives. These lessons remain relevant for believers today, encouraging us to live faithfully and serve God wholeheartedly in everything we do.
