Exodus 36:5

Listen to this article

“And they spake unto Moses, saying, The people bring much more than enough for the service of the work, which the Lord commanded to make.”

Context:Exodus 36 is part of the narrative describing the construction of the Tabernacle, a portable sanctuary for the Israelites in the wilderness. The Tabernacle was a place of worship and the center of religious life for the Israelites during their journey from Egypt to the Promised Land.

Overflowing Generosity:The verse starts by stating that the people brought “much more than enough” for the service of the work. This verse showcases the extraordinary generosity and willingness of the Israelites to contribute towards the construction of the Tabernacle. Their hearts were stirred to give generously to the Lord’s work. This example serves as an inspiration for us today to be willing to give abundantly to the work of God and His Kingdom.

Obedience to God’s Commands:The construction of the Tabernacle was not initiated by the people on their own accord. Instead, it was in response to what “the Lord commanded to make.” This demonstrates the importance of obedience to God’s instructions. When God gives us a specific task or mission, He also equips and provides for us to fulfill it. The people followed God’s commands willingly, and as a result, they experienced God’s blessings and provision.

God’s Provision:The people’s willingness to give more than enough highlights God’s ability to provide abundantly. When we give with a cheerful heart and in alignment with God’s will, He blesses us in ways beyond our expectations. This principle is echoed in 2 Corinthians 9:6-8, which encourages cheerful giving and assures us that God will supply all our needs according to His riches in glory.

Unity and Teamwork:The construction of the Tabernacle was a collaborative effort involving the whole community. It required unity, cooperation, and teamwork to accomplish such a significant task. This verse reminds us of the importance of working together in harmony to achieve God’s purposes. When we come together, combining our individual strengths and resources, we can accomplish great things for God’s Kingdom.

Stewardship:The Israelites’ willingness to contribute generously was not out of compulsion but out of a desire to serve and honor the Lord. This attitude of stewardship reflects the understanding that everything they had ultimately belonged to God. As stewards, they recognized that their resources were entrusted to them by God, and they used them to fulfill His purposes. We, too, should approach our resources and possessions with a similar perspective, using them to advance God’s Kingdom and serve others.

Gratitude and Humility:Lastly, this verse highlights the humility of the Israelites in acknowledging that what they had brought was “more than enough.” They recognized God’s graciousness in providing for them and were grateful for the opportunity to be part of His work. Gratitude and humility are essential qualities for any believer, as they remind us that we are entirely dependent on God’s grace and provision.

In conclusion, Exodus 36:5 serves as a beautiful illustration of the overflowing generosity, obedience to God’s commands, God’s provision, unity, stewardship, gratitude, and humility displayed by the Israelites during the construction of the Tabernacle. It encourages us to have the same heart of giving and service, trusting in God’s provision and working together in unity to fulfill His purposes.
