Exodus 36:8

Listen to this article

“And every wise-hearted man among them that wrought the work of the tabernacle made ten curtains of fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet: with cherubims of cunning work made he them.”

Context:The book of Exodus is the second book of the Bible and tells the story of the Israelites’ liberation from slavery in Egypt and their journey to the Promised Land. In chapter 36, we find a detailed account of the construction of the Tabernacle-a portable sanctuary where God’s presence would dwell among His people during their wilderness wanderings. The Tabernacle was constructed under the direction of skilled craftsmen and artisans, who were filled with the Spirit of God and wisdom to carry out this sacred task.

“And every wise-hearted man among them that wrought the work of the tabernacle…”: The construction of the Tabernacle required skilled workers who were not only talented in craftsmanship but also wise-hearted. In the biblical context, having a “wise heart” referred to being filled with wisdom and understanding from God. These individuals were appointed by God for this special task.

“…made ten curtains of fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet…”: The wise-hearted craftsmen made ten curtains for the Tabernacle. These curtains were made of high-quality materials: fine twined linen, blue, purple, and scarlet. Each of these colours held symbolic significance:

  • Fine twined linen: Represents purity, righteousness, and holiness.
  • Blue: Symbolises the heavenly or divine nature of God and His revelation.
  • Purple: Represents royalty, authority, and majesty.
  • Scarlet: Symbolises sacrifice, blood, and redemption.

“…with cherubims of cunning work made he them.”: The curtains were adorned with cherubim, which were angelic beings often associated with the presence of God. These cherubim were crafted with “cunning work,” indicating the artisans’ exceptional skill and craftsmanship in bringing intricate designs to life.

Spiritual Significance and Application:

  • Reverence for God’s Presence:The construction of the Tabernacle and its intricate details demonstrate the Israelites’ reverence for the presence of God among them. It serves as a reminder that we too should approach God with awe and humility, recognising His holiness and majesty.
  • God’s Call and Gifting:The selection of wise-hearted individuals by God to work on the Tabernacle highlights the concept of divine calling and gifting. Each person has unique talents bestowed by God, and when we use those gifts for His glory, we contribute to His kingdom’s work.
  • Symbolism of Colours:The various colours used in the curtains represent different aspects of our relationship with God. As believers, we should strive for purity, seek divine revelation, recognise God’s authority, and appreciate the sacrificial work of Jesus Christ for our redemption.
  • Cherishing God’s Presence:The cherubim on the curtains remind us of God’s presence and protection. As Christians, we have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and we must cherish this presence, seeking to live in obedience and communion with God daily.
  • Collaboration in Service:The construction of the Tabernacle was a collaborative effort. Likewise, in the body of Christ, we are called to work together, utilising our unique gifts and talents for the common goal of advancing God’s kingdom.

In conclusion, Exodus 36:8 provides us with a glimpse of the dedication, skill, and reverence the wise-hearted craftsmen demonstrated in constructing the Tabernacle. As we meditate on this passage, we are encouraged to offer our own skills and talents for the service of God and to approach His presence with awe and humility.
