Exodus 37:1

Posted on 29 May 2025
Listen to this article

"And Bezaleel made the ark of shittim wood: two cubits and a half was the length of it, and a cubit and a half the breadth of it, and a cubit and a half the height of it."

Context:Before we explore this verse, let’s briefly recap the context. In the book of Exodus, the Israelites had been delivered from slavery in Egypt through God’s miraculous intervention and guidance under the leadership of Moses. While in the wilderness, God instructed Moses to build the Tabernacle, a portable sanctuary, where God’s presence would dwell among His people. The Ark of the Covenant was a central piece of furniture within the Holy of Holies, the innermost section of the Tabernacle.

Significance of the Ark of the Covenant:The Ark of the Covenant held immense importance in the religious and cultural life of the Israelites. It symbolized the presence of God among His people, represented His covenant with them, and signified His guidance and protection throughout their journey. The Ark contained the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments, a jar of manna, and Aaron’s staff, representing the covenant, provision, and priesthood, respectively.

Exodus 37:1 describes the construction of the Ark of the Covenant by Bezaleel, a skilled craftsman chosen by God to lead the work on the Tabernacle and its furnishings. Let’s break down the verse into its components:

"And Bezaleel made the ark of shittim wood:"

  • Bezaleel, in obedience to God’s command, was the craftsman responsible for building the Ark.
  • The Ark was made from "shittim" wood, also known as acacia wood, a durable and long-lasting material.

"Two cubits and a half was the length of it, and a cubit and a half the breadth of it, and a cubit and a half the height of it.":

  • The dimensions of the Ark were specified by God. It was rectangular in shape.
  • It measured two and a half cubits in length, one and a half cubits in breadth, and one and a half cubits in height. (Note: The exact measurement of a cubit is somewhat debated, but it’s generally considered to be about 18 inches or 45 centimeters.)

Spiritual Lessons:

  • Obedience to God’s Commands:Bezaleel’s obedience is an essential lesson here. When we follow God’s instructions and use the talents and skills He has given us, we can contribute to His kingdom and purposes.
  • God’s Design and Specifications:God is specific in His instructions. The construction of the Ark teaches us the importance of following God’s design precisely. In our lives, we should seek God’s guidance and adhere to His principles and plans.
  • Symbolism of the Ark:The Ark itself symbolizes God’s presence in our lives. Just as God dwelt among the Israelites in the Tabernacle, He desires to be close to us, guiding, protecting, and leading us.
  • The Ark as a Type of Christ:In the New Testament, the Ark can be seen as a type or foreshadowing of Jesus Christ. Just as the Ark contained the stone tablets of the Law, Jesus perfectly fulfilled the Law. He is the true embodiment of God’s presence among His people and the mediator of the new covenant.

Overall, Exodus 37:1 reminds us of God’s presence, His guidance in constructing the Tabernacle, and the importance of obedience and following His plans in our lives.
