Exodus 37:15

Listen to this article

“And he made the staves of shittim wood, and overlaid them with gold, to bear the table.”

In this verse, we find a description of the construction of the table for the Tabernacle, which was a portable sanctuary used by the Israelites during their journey through the wilderness. The table was an essential part of the Tabernacle’s furniture and held special significance in the worship and service of God.

The Tabernacle and Its Significance:The Tabernacle was a sacred place where God dwelled among His people. It consisted of several elements, including the Holy of Holies, the Ark of the Covenant, the Altar of Incense, and the Table of Showbread. Each component had a specific purpose and symbolic meaning. Understanding the Tabernacle’s significance helps us grasp the importance of the table in the context of worship and the Israelites’ relationship with God.

Materials Used:The verse mentions two materials: shittim wood and gold. Shittim wood, also known as acacia wood, was highly valued for its durability and strength. It was a fitting choice for the staves, which were used to carry the table during the Israelites’ journey. The gold overlay symbolised the preciousness and sanctity of the table, representing the honour and glory given to God in His dwelling place.

The Purpose of the Table:The table, often called the “Table of Showbread” or the “Table of the Presence,” had a specific purpose. It held twelve loaves of bread, representing the twelve tribes of Israel. These loaves were replaced every Sabbath, and the priests ate the previous week’s loaves, signifying the fellowship between God and His people and providing a way for the priests to be sustained during their service in the Tabernacle. The table, therefore, served as a reminder of God’s provision and presence with His chosen people.

Spiritual Lessons:As we delve into this verse, we can draw spiritual lessons applicable to our lives today. The use of gold, symbolising God’s glory, reminds us of His majesty and holiness. The staves, which were used to carry the table, highlight the importance of being willing and obedient to carry out God’s work. The provision of bread and the fellowship it represented teach us about our dependence on God for sustenance and the need for regular communion with Him through prayer and study of His Word.

Connection to Jesus Christ:In the New Testament, Jesus referred to Himself as the “Bread of Life” (John 6:35). He is the ultimate provision from God, offering spiritual sustenance and satisfying our deepest needs. The Table of Showbread can be seen as a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ, emphasising the significance of His role as the mediator between God and humanity.

In conclusion, Exodus 37:15 provides us with a glimpse into the construction of the Table of Showbread in the Tabernacle. Through this study, we can appreciate the intricate details and symbolism present in God’s dwelling place and draw valuable spiritual lessons that have relevance for our lives as Christians today.
