Exodus 37:16

Listen to this article

“And he made the vessels which were upon the table, his dishes, and his spoons, and his bowls, and his covers to cover withal, of pure gold.”

Context:In this chapter of Exodus, we find a detailed account of the construction of the Ark of the Covenant and the other furniture for the tabernacle. The tabernacle was a portable sanctuary that the Israelites carried with them during their journey through the wilderness. It was a place where they could worship and offer sacrifices to God.

Vessels upon the table:The verse mentions that these vessels were placed on the table. This refers to the Table of Showbread, which was one of the pieces of furniture inside the Holy Place of the tabernacle. The Table of Showbread held twelve loaves of bread, representing the twelve tribes of Israel, and was replaced with fresh loaves every Sabbath. It symbolised God’s presence among His people and the sustenance He provided.

Dishes, spoons, bowls, and covers:These were the different types of vessels used for various purposes in the tabernacle. The dishes likely held the bread, the spoons might have been used for offering incense or for scooping out flour or oil, the bowls could have been used for mixing ingredients or holding sacrificial offerings, and the covers were used to protect the vessels and their contents.

Made of pure gold:The materials used in constructing the tabernacle and its furnishings were of great significance. Gold was a precious metal associated with purity, value, and holiness. Using pure gold for these vessels signified their sanctity and the importance of the worship and service offered within the tabernacle.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • Attention to detail in worship:The construction of the tabernacle and its vessels involved precise instructions given by God to Moses. This emphasises the importance of paying attention to the details in our worship and service to God. It demonstrates that God cares about how we approach Him and that we should offer our best to Him in reverence and devotion.
  • Holiness and purity:The use of pure gold for the vessels underscores the concept of holiness in the presence of God. As Christians, we are called to live lives that reflect purity and holiness, separating ourselves from sinful behaviours and thoughts. These vessels serve as a reminder of our call to live holy lives dedicated to God’s service.
  • God’s provision and sustenance:The Table of Showbread, with the twelve loaves, symbolises God’s provision and sustenance for His people. As we come before God, He meets our needs and provides for us, just as He did for the Israelites in the wilderness. We can trust in His faithfulness and care for us.
  • Our lives as vessels for God:In the New Testament, we are referred to as vessels of God. Just as these vessels were set apart for sacred purposes in the tabernacle, we too should consecrate ourselves for God’s service. We can be vessels of honour, being used by God to carry out His purposes and reflect His glory to the world.

Remember that Bible study involves exploring the broader context of the passage, cross-referencing related scriptures, and applying the principles learned to our lives. Always seek to deepen your understanding of God’s Word and its significance for your personal walk with Him.
