Exodus 37:19

Listen to this article

“Three bowls made after the fashion of almonds in one branch, a knop, and a flower; and three bowls made like almonds in another branch, a knop, and a flower: so throughout the six branches going out of the candlestick.”

Context:Exodus 37 provides a detailed account of the making of various holy articles for the Tabernacle. The verse in question refers to the craftsmanship of the golden lampstand, also known as the candlestick or menorah. God instructed Moses to construct the lampstand, and its design had specific symbolic significance for the Israelites. This verse specifically describes the ornamentation on the branches of the lampstand.

Lampstand’s Design:The lampstand was fashioned in the form of a tree with seven branches, and each branch had ornamental elements on it. The description mentions three bowls shaped like almonds, a knop (a decorative knob or bud), and a flower on each of the six branches.

Symbolism of Almonds:The mention of almond shapes in the bowls is significant. Almonds were a common tree in the region and were known for being the first to blossom in the spring. In Scripture, almonds symbolise watchfulness and swiftness. For example, in Jeremiah 1:11-12, God shows the prophet a vision of an almond branch to signify that He is watching over His word to perform it. The almond’s early blossoming also points to God’s promptness in fulfilling His promises.

Symbolism of Flowers and Knops:The flowers and knops were ornamental elements on the branches. While the specific symbolism of these decorative elements isn’t explicitly mentioned in this verse, they likely served as further embellishments to enhance the beauty and symbolism of the lampstand. Throughout the Bible, flowers are often associated with beauty, growth, and fruitfulness.

The Unity of the Lampstand:The verse emphasises consistency in the design of the lampstand. Each branch had the same ornamentation, signifying unity and completeness in God’s plan. This unity reflects the harmony and order God desires within His sanctuary and among His people.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • Promptness and Watchfulness:The presence of almond-shaped bowls on the lampstand serves as a reminder to be watchful for God’s Word and His promises. Just as almonds were the first to blossom, we should be attentive and prompt in following God’s guidance and fulfilling His purposes in our lives.
  • Beauty and Unity in the Body of Christ:The lampstand’s design, with uniform ornamentation on each branch, teaches us about the beauty and significance of unity within the body of Christ. As believers, we are all part of one body, and our individual gifts and talents should contribute to the greater purpose of spreading God’s light and love to the world.
  • The Light of Christ:The lampstand itself symbolised the light of God’s presence in the Tabernacle. In the New Testament, Jesus declares Himself as the “light of the world” (John 8:12). As Christians, we are called to reflect His light and be a shining witness in the world.

In conclusion, Exodus 37:19 offers valuable insights into the symbolism and craftsmanship of the golden lampstand in the Tabernacle. Beyond its physical appearance, the lampstand’s design carries spiritual lessons of watchfulness, unity, and reflecting the light of Christ in our lives.
