Exodus 37:2

Posted on 29 May 2025
Listen to this article

“And he overlaid it with pure gold within and without, and made a crown of gold to it round about.”

Context:The verse is part of the narrative of the construction of the Ark of the Covenant. God gave specific instructions to Moses on how to build this sacred object, which would serve as a symbol of God’s presence among the Israelites and hold the stone tablets with the Ten Commandments. Bezalel, a skilled craftsman, was chosen by God to lead the construction of the Ark and other items for the Tabernacle.

Verse Analysis:1. “And he overlaid it with pure gold within and without”: The “he” in this verse refers to Bezalel. Here, it describes how Bezalel covered the entire Ark, both inside and outside, with pure gold. Gold in the Bible often symbolizes purity, divinity, and value. The fact that the Ark was overlaid with pure gold signifies its significance and holiness in representing the presence of God.

“Made a crown of gold to it round about”: Bezalel also crafted a crown or molding of gold around the top edge of the Ark. This crown may have added to the beauty and symbolism of the Ark, emphasizing its royal and sacred nature. It could also symbolize God’s sovereignty and kingship, as the Ark represented His throne among the people of Israel.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • God’s Desire for Excellence:Bezalel’s craftsmanship and attention to detail demonstrate God’s desire for excellence in the things dedicated to Him. As believers, we are called to offer our best to God in everything we do, whether it be our talents, resources, or service.
  • God’s Presence Among His People:The Ark of the Covenant was a tangible representation of God’s presence among the Israelites. Today, we don’t need physical symbols like the Ark because, through Jesus Christ, God’s Spirit dwells in the hearts of believers. The Ark serves as a reminder that God desires to be close to His people and wants a personal relationship with each one of us.
  • Symbolism of Gold:The extensive use of pure gold in the Ark reminds us of the preciousness and value of God’s presence. It also symbolizes the purity and righteousness of God. Just as gold is refined through intense heat and pressure, our lives may go through challenges and trials that refine and purify us as we grow closer to God.
  • The Crown of the Ark:The crown on top of the Ark may symbolize the lordship and kingship of God. It reminds us that God is the ruler of all, and we should submit to His authority in our lives. Jesus, the Messiah, is the ultimate King of Kings, and His lordship should be acknowledged in our lives.

Application:Exodus 37:2 encourages us to remember the significance of God’s presence in our lives. It prompts us to pursue excellence in our worship, service, and devotion to God. Let us acknowledge God’s sovereignty and kingship, submitting ourselves to His authority. Furthermore, we should strive to live lives of purity and righteousness, just as the Ark was overlaid with pure gold inside and out.

As we contemplate the symbolism and meaning behind the Ark, let it deepen our appreciation for the work of Christ, who tore down the veil that separated us from God, making it possible for us to approach Him directly. Through faith in Jesus, we can experience God’s presence and walk in a personal relationship with Him.
