Exodus 37:29

Posted on 25 April 2025
Listen to this article

“And he made the holy anointing oil, and the pure incense of sweet spices, according to the work of the apothecary.”

Context: In this chapter, we find a detailed account of the skilled craftsmen who were commissioned to construct the various elements of the tabernacle under the guidance of Moses. The verse in question specifically refers to Bezalel, who was chosen by God and filled with His Spirit to lead the construction of the Ark of the Covenant and other sacred items.

The Holy Anointing Oil: The verse mentions the “holy anointing oil.” In the preceding verses (Exodus 30:22-25), God gave specific instructions to Moses regarding the preparation of this sacred oil. It was a unique blend of spices, including myrrh, cinnamon, calamus, and cassia, mixed with olive oil. This oil was used for anointing the priests, the high priest, and various holy objects in the tabernacle, signifying their consecration and dedication to the Lord.

The anointing oil is symbolic of the presence and empowerment of the Holy Spirit. Anointing represents being set apart for God’s purposes, being chosen and equipped for divine service. In the New Testament, we see a parallel in the anointing of the Holy Spirit upon believers for spiritual gifts and ministry (1 John 2:20, 2 Corinthians 1:21).

The Pure Incense of Sweet Spices: The verse also mentions “the pure incense of sweet spices.” In the previous verses (Exodus 30:34-38), God instructed Moses on how to prepare the special incense used in the tabernacle. This incense was exclusively reserved for use inside the tabernacle and had a distinct, pleasant aroma. The incense was burnt on the altar of incense, which stood before the veil that separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place, and its fragrant smoke symbolized prayers ascending to God.

The incense represents the prayers and intercession of God’s people. In the New Testament, we find references to the “golden bowls of incense” which are the prayers of the saints before God’s throne (Revelation 5:8).

The Work of the Apothecary: Lastly, the verse mentions “the work of the apothecary” or the work of a skilled perfumer or craftsman. This indicates that the anointing oil and incense were not to be made haphazardly but with great skill, precision, and reverence. The anointing oil and incense were unique and sacred, and their preparation required a skilled artisan who would handle these substances with care and in accordance with God’s instructions.

Overall, Exodus 37:29 reminds us of the importance of sacred objects and rituals in the Old Testament, which served as symbolic representations of deeper spiritual truths. The anointing oil and incense point to the role of the Holy Spirit in consecration and prayer. Today, as believers in Christ, we are reminded of the significance of God’s presence through the Holy Spirit in our lives and the privilege of coming before God in prayer.
