Exodus 38:12

Listen to this article

“And for the west side were hangings of fifty cubits, their pillars ten, and their sockets ten; the hooks of the pillars and their fillets of silver.”

To better understand this verse in its context, we need to look at the broader context of the passage and the significance of the items mentioned.

Context:Exodus 38 describes the construction of the tabernacle, which was a portable sanctuary for the Israelites during their journey through the wilderness. It was designed according to the specifications given by God to Moses on Mount Sinai. The tabernacle was divided into several sections, and each section had specific coverings and hangings made from various materials.

Verse Breakdown:

  • "And for the west side were hangings of fifty cubits":This verse refers to the western side of the tabernacle, which was enclosed by hangings. The "fifty cubits" implies the length of the hanging curtains on the west side.
  • "Their pillars ten, and their sockets ten":To support the hangings, there were ten pillars, and each of these pillars had sockets in which they were set. These sockets were probably made of bronze.
  • "The hooks of the pillars and their fillets of silver":The pillars had hooks and fillets made of silver. The purpose of these hooks and fillets was likely to hold the curtains securely in place and maintain the integrity of the structure.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • Obedience to God’s Instructions:The construction of the tabernacle and its various elements teaches us the importance of following God’s instructions diligently. The details given to Moses were precise, symbolizing God’s desire for His people to approach Him with reverence and holiness.
  • God’s Presence Among His People:The tabernacle was the place where God’s presence dwelled among the Israelites. The curtains and pillars served as a physical boundary, signifying the separation between the sacred and the common. This reminds us of the need to approach God with humility and awe, recognizing His holiness and our unworthiness.
  • The Use of Silver:Silver is often associated with redemption and atonement in the Bible. In this context, the silver used for the hooks and fillets could symbolize the cost of approaching God, which ultimately foreshadows the ultimate redemption brought by Jesus Christ through His sacrificial death on the cross.
  • The Tabernacle as a Foreshadowing:The tabernacle itself, its elements, and the entire system of worship in the Old Testament were a foreshadowing of the coming of Jesus Christ, who would become the ultimate High Priest and the perfect sacrifice for the sins of humanity.

Conclusion:Exodus 38:12 may seem like a small detail in the larger narrative of the tabernacle’s construction, but every aspect of the tabernacle carried significant symbolism and spiritual lessons. It reminds us of the importance of obedience to God’s instructions, the reverence we should have in His presence, and the ultimate redemption and atonement found in Jesus Christ.
