Listen to this article

“This is the sum of the tabernacle, even of the tabernacle of testimony, as it was counted, according to the commandment of Moses, for the service of the Levites, by the hand of Ithamar, son to Aaron the priest.”

Context:The book of Exodus primarily deals with the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, their journey through the wilderness, and the establishment of the covenant with God at Mount Sinai. In this particular chapter, we find a detailed account of the construction of the tabernacle, a portable sanctuary that served as the dwelling place of God’s presence among the Israelites during their time in the wilderness.

The Tabernacle of Testimony:The verse starts by mentioning the “tabernacle of testimony.” The tabernacle was a sacred tent where the Ark of the Covenant was kept, and it was considered a place of testimony because it symbolized God’s presence among His people and His covenant with them. The tabernacle was central to Israel’s worship and played a significant role in their relationship with God.

Counting and Commandment of Moses:The verse states that the tabernacle was counted and constructed according to the commandment of Moses:This emphasizes that the construction of the tabernacle was not a mere human initiative but a divine command from God Himself. God gave Moses:detailed instructions on how to build the tabernacle and its furnishings, as described in earlier chapters of Exodus.

Service of the Levites:The Levites were a tribe set apart for serving in the tabernacle and assisting the priests. They had various responsibilities, such as setting up and dismantling the tabernacle whenever the Israelites moved during their journey in the wilderness. The tabernacle was divided into different sections, and specific clans of Levites were assigned to carry and care for each part.

Ithamar, Son of Aaron the Priest:Ithamar, son of Aaron the priest:Ithamar was one of Aaron’s sons and a priestly descendant from the tribe of Levi. In the context of this verse, he played a significant role in overseeing the construction and service of the tabernacle. As the high priest’s son, he had authority and responsibility in ensuring that everything was carried out according to God’s commands.

Application:

  • Obedience to God’s Commands: The construction of the tabernacle reminds us of the importance of obedience to God’s commands. God had specific instructions for building the tabernacle, and Moses:and the people followed them faithfully. As Christians, we are also called to obey God’s commands in our lives, recognizing that His ways are higher and better than our own.
  • The Presence of God:The tabernacle served as a place where God’s presence dwelled among the Israelites. Today, we no longer have a physical tabernacle, but as believers, our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). We should seek to maintain a close relationship with God, acknowledging His presence in our lives and living in a way that honors Him.
  • Service and Ministry:The Levites’ service in the tabernacle reminds us of the importance of serving in God’s kingdom. Each believer has been gifted and called to serve in various capacities within the Church and the community. We should be willing to use our gifts and talents to advance God’s kingdom and help others.

Conclusion:Exodus 38:21 provides a glimpse into the construction of the tabernacle and the significance it held for the Israelites. Beyond its historical context, this verse reminds us of the importance of obedience to God’s commands, recognizing His presence in our lives, and actively serving in His kingdom. As we study and meditate on this passage, let us apply its principles to our lives and seek to honor God in all that we do.
