Exodus 38:23

Listen to this article

“And with him was Aholiab, son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, an engraver, and a cunning workman, and an embroiderer in blue, and in purple, and in scarlet, and fine linen.”

Context:In the book of Exodus, we find the detailed account of the construction of the Tabernacle, which was a portable sanctuary that served as a place of worship for the Israelites during their journey in the wilderness. God gave specific instructions to Moses on how to build the Tabernacle and its furnishings. In Exodus 38, we read about the construction of the altar of burnt offering and the basin for washing, among other items. Verse 23 focuses on a skilled artisan named Aholiab, who was chosen to work on the construction of the Tabernacle.

Key Points:

Aholiab’s Background:Aholiab was the son of Ahisamach, and he belonged to the tribe of Dan. The fact that his lineage is mentioned highlights the importance of knowing one’s heritage and ancestry among the Israelites.

God-Given Skills:Aholiab was gifted by God with specific talents and abilities. He was described as an “engraver” or an artisan skilled in working with metal or stone, a “cunning workman” which could also be translated as a skilled craftsman, and an “embroiderer” skilled in working with fabrics and textiles. God equips people with various gifts and talents for His purposes.

Diverse Skills:Aholiab possessed a range of artistic talents, including working with different colours such as blue, purple, and scarlet, and fine linen. These skills were instrumental in crafting the intricate and beautiful elements of the Tabernacle.

Involvement in the Tabernacle Construction:Aholiab was actively involved in the construction of the Tabernacle, using his God-given skills to contribute to this sacred project. He played a significant role in making the Tabernacle a place of beauty and reverence, fit for the worship of the Almighty.

Spiritual Lessons:

God’s Design and Purpose:The inclusion of skilled artisans like Aholiab in the construction of the Tabernacle reminds us that God values the diversity of talents and gifts among His people. He has a unique purpose for each individual and calls them to use their talents to serve Him and others.

Faithfulness in Ordinary Tasks:Aholiab’s role as an artisan demonstrates that even in seemingly ordinary tasks, God can use our skills and efforts to bring about something extraordinary and sacred. Every task, when done with diligence and excellence, can be an act of worship.

Collaborative Effort:The construction of the Tabernacle required a team of skilled workers coming together to achieve a common goal. Similarly, in the body of Christ, we are called to work together, using our diverse gifts, for the advancement of God’s kingdom.

Beauty in Worship:The attention to detail and the use of fine materials in constructing the Tabernacle teach us about the beauty and reverence that should be present in our worship of God. We are to offer Him our best, recognising that He deserves nothing less than our wholehearted devotion.

Application:As we reflect on Exodus 38:23, let’s consider how we can use our God-given skills and talents to honour Him. Whether in our work, our relationships, or our service in the church, let’s strive to excel and bring glory to God in all that we do. Let’s also appreciate the diverse gifts present in the body of believers and seek opportunities to collaborate and support one another, just as Aholiab worked together with others to build the Tabernacle. Finally, let’s approach our worship of God with reverence and beauty, offering Him the best of what we have, for He is worthy of our utmost devotion.
