Exodus 39:14

Listen to this article

“And the stones were according to the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names, like the engravings of a signet, every one with his name, according to the twelve tribes.”

Context:The book of Exodus is the second book of the Bible and is part of the Pentateuch, also known as the Torah, which comprises the first five books of the Old Testament. The events in Exodus take place after the descendants of Jacob (Israel) had multiplied greatly in Egypt and became enslaved by the Egyptians. God raised up Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt and into the Promised Land. The verse in question is part of the detailed description of the priestly garments that were to be made for Aaron and his sons, as well as the construction of the Tabernacle.

In Exodus 39:14, we encounter a specific detail regarding the breastplate of the high priest’s garments. The breastplate was a significant part of the priestly attire and had twelve precious stones, each representing one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Let’s break down the verse further:

“And the stones were according to the names of the children of Israel, twelve…” – The breastplate was adorned with twelve precious stones, one for each tribe of Israel. This emphasized the unity and identity of the entire nation, as the high priest carried the names of all the tribes with him.

“…according to their names, like the engravings of a signet, every one with his name, according to the twelve tribes.” – Each stone was engraved with the name of one of the twelve tribes. A signet is a seal used to mark or authenticate something, often bearing the name or emblem of its owner. In this case, the engraved stones served as a symbolic representation of the individuality and uniqueness of each tribe within the larger community of Israel.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • Unity in Diversity:The twelve stones on the breastplate represent the twelve tribes of Israel, each with its distinct identity, history, and characteristics. Despite their differences, they were united under the covenant with God. This teaches us the importance of embracing diversity within the body of believers and finding strength in unity, just as the Church is composed of various members with different gifts and callings (1 Corinthians 12:12-27).
  • Personal Identification:Each stone being engraved with a tribe’s name indicates that God knows and identifies with each individual personally. He knows us by name and cares for us individually (Isaiah 43:1). This should remind us of God’s intimate relationship with His people and His desire to lead and guide us personally.
  • Representing Others:As the high priest carried the names of the tribes, we, as Christians, are called to intercede and pray for others, bearing their burdens and needs before God (Galatians 6:2, Ephesians 6:18).
  • Reflecting God’s Light:Precious stones are known for their beauty and brilliance. As believers, we are called to be like “living stones” reflecting the light of Christ to the world (1 Peter 2:5).

Conclusion:Exodus 39:14 highlights the importance of unity, individuality, and personal identification within the community of believers. Each tribe’s name engraved on the precious stones symbolizes the value God places on each person and the unity He desires for His people. As we reflect on this passage, we are encouraged to celebrate our diversity while remaining united in our commitment to follow God and fulfill His purposes in our lives.
