Exodus 39:15

Listen to this article

“And they made upon the breastplate chains at the ends, of wreathen work of pure gold.”

Context:The book of Exodus is part of the Old Testament and recounts the story of the Israelites’ deliverance from slavery in Egypt under the leadership of Moses. It also includes the instructions given by God to Moses for the construction of the Tabernacle, a portable sanctuary where God’s presence would dwell among His people.

In Exodus 39, we read about the skilled craftsmen who worked on creating the garments of the High Priest and the holy items to be used in the Tabernacle. Specifically, verse 15 focuses on the breastplate worn by the High Priest.

Key Points:

  • The Breastplate:The breastplate was a significant and beautiful part of the High Priest’s garments. It was worn over the ephod (a priestly garment) and was placed on the High Priest’s chest, covering his heart. The breastplate served as a symbol of judgment and a means of seeking God’s will in important matters. It contained twelve precious stones, each representing one of the twelve tribes of Israel (Exodus 28:15-30).
  • Chains of Wreathen Work:The verse mentions that the chains on the breastplate were of “wreathen work.” This means that the chains were made by twisting or weaving gold threads together, resulting in a braided or intertwined design. This added to the beauty and craftsmanship of the breastplate.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • Attention to Detail:The attention given to the construction of the High Priest’s garments and the Tabernacle highlights the importance of paying attention to details when it comes to worship and serving God. God is interested not only in the big things but also in the smallest aspects of our lives. This reminds us to be diligent in our service to Him, ensuring that everything we do is done with excellence and devotion.
  • Representation of Unity:The twelve precious stones on the breastplate represented the twelve tribes of Israel. This symbolizes the unity and oneness of God’s people. It is essential for believers to come together, unified in faith and purpose, just as the tribes of Israel were united under God’s guidance. This unity enables the Church to be effective in fulfilling God’s purposes on the Earth.
  • Seek God’s Will:The breastplate’s role in seeking God’s will emphasizes the importance of seeking His guidance in our lives. Just as the High Priest would inquire of God through the Urim and Thummim (objects placed in the breastplate), we should seek God’s direction through prayer, meditation on His Word, and seeking the counsel of mature believers when making important decisions.
  • The Symbolism of Gold:Gold is a precious metal often associated with purity, value, and divinity. In this verse, the use of pure gold for the chains highlights the holiness and sacredness of the High Priest’s office and the Tabernacle. As believers, we are called to be set apart and consecrated for God’s purposes, representing His holiness in the world.

In summary, Exodus 39:15 teaches us about the craftsmanship and beauty involved in the construction of the High Priest’s breastplate. Beyond its physical appearance, the breastplate holds spiritual significance, reminding us of the importance of attention to detail, unity among God’s people, seeking His will, and living a life consecrated for His purposes.
