“The brasen altar, and his grate of brass, his staves, and all his vessels, the laver and his foot,”
Context:Exodus 39 is part of the detailed account of the construction of the Tabernacle, the portable dwelling place of God used by the Israelites during their wilderness journey. In chapters 35–40, the Bible records how the people followed God’s instructions—originally given in Exodus 25–31—with remarkable precision. Exodus 39 focuses on the making of the priestly garments and the final furnishings for the tabernacle. Verse 39 is part of a summary (v.33–43) listing all the items made for the tabernacle, leading up to its presentation to Moses and ultimately to God’s approval.
The Brasen (Bronze) Altar:Also known as the Altar of Burnt Offering (Ex. 27:1–8). It was located in the outer court. Used for animal sacrifices — a central aspect of Israel’s worship.
Grate of Brass:A metal grating placed inside the altar, likely halfway down. It allowed ashes to fall and facilitated the fire’s airflow.
Staves:Poles used to carry the altar and other tabernacle items (since the tabernacle was portable). Made of acacia wood overlaid with brass.
All His Vessels:Tools used for sacrifice: firepans, basins, forks, and shovels (Ex. 27:3). These supported the rituals carried out at the altar.
The Laver and His Foot:The laver was a basin made of bronze mirrors (Ex. 30:18; 38:8). Used by priests to wash their hands and feet before ministering. “His foot” refers to the stand or base supporting the laver.
Theological Significance
- God is a God of Order: The meticulous construction of each item shows that God cares about details in worship. Obedience to His instructions mattered deeply.
- The Altar and Sacrifice: The brasen altar prefigures Christ’s sacrifice. Just as offerings were burned there for sin, Jesus offered Himself once for all (Hebrews 10:10).
- Purification Before Worship: The laver represents the need for cleansing before entering God’s presence. Spiritually, it points to repentance, baptism, and ongoing sanctification.
Application for Today
- Worship Involves Preparation: Just as the priests had to cleanse themselves and follow exact rituals, we too should approach God thoughtfully and reverently, preparing our hearts in prayer and humility.
- Every Detail Matters to God: Even tools and support items had a purpose in God’s design. This reminds us that no task in God’s kingdom is insignificant — whether we preach, serve, or clean the church.
- Pointing to Christ: Every part of the tabernacle, including this verse’s items, foreshadows Christ: The altar = Christ’s sacrifice, The laver = our cleansing through His Word and Spirit
