Exodus 39:4

Listen to this article

“They made shoulderpieces for it, to couple it together: by the two edges was it coupled together.”

Context:The book of Exodus is the second book in the Old Testament and is part of the Pentateuch, which also includes Genesis, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Exodus primarily focuses on the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, the giving of the Ten Commandments and the establishment of the Tabernacle as a place of worship and meeting with God.

In chapter 39, the narrative describes the meticulous construction of the priestly garments that would be worn by Aaron and his sons, who were consecrated as priests to serve in the Tabernacle.

Exodus 39:4 specifically mentions the shoulderpieces of one of the priestly garments. These shoulderpieces were designed to help hold and support the ephod, which was a significant part of the high priest’s attire.

The Ephod:The ephod was a unique and important garment worn by the high priest. It was like an apron made of finely woven material and beautifully decorated with precious stones. It had two shoulder straps that would rest on the high priest’s shoulders.

Coupling the Ephod:Exodus 28:7 provides more detail about the construction of the ephod, explaining that it was to be “joined together” or “coupled together” at the two shoulder edges. These shoulderpieces played a crucial role in holding the ephod in place on the priest’s shoulders while distributing the weight of the ephod evenly.

Spiritual Lessons:Now, let’s draw some spiritual lessons from Exodus 39:4:

  • Attention to Detail:In the construction of the priestly garments, we see a remarkable attention to detail. Each aspect of the attire was precisely designed according to God’s instructions (Exodus 28:3). This emphasizes the significance of paying attention to God’s instructions in our lives. When we obey God’s word and follow His guidance with precision, we show our reverence for Him and His plan.
  • Interconnectedness and Unity:The shoulderpieces were used to couple the ephod together, symbolizing the importance of unity and cooperation among God’s people. As Christians, we are all part of the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-27), and we are called to work together in harmony, supporting and helping one another. The church functions most effectively when its members are united and working together for the common purpose of glorifying God and fulfilling His mission.
  • The Priesthood of Believers:In the Old Testament, the priesthood had a specific role, representing the people before God and offering sacrifices for sins. In the New Testament, through Jesus Christ, believers become part of a “royal priesthood” (1 Peter 2:9), where we can approach God directly through Christ without the need for a human mediator. Just as the shoulderpieces held the ephod close to the priest’s shoulders, we, as believers, are called to draw near to God, relying on the support and strength provided by Jesus, our High Priest.
  • God’s Divine Design:The beauty and symbolism found in the priestly garments highlight the importance of God’s design and order. God is a God of order, and everything He does has a purpose. This encourages us to seek His guidance and trust in His divine plan for our lives. When we align ourselves with God’s purposes, we can experience a sense of fulfillment and purpose that comes from being part of His grand design.

In conclusion, Exodus 39:4 reminds us of the importance of attention to detail, unity among believers, our role as priests before God, and the significance of following God’s divine design in our lives. Let us approach God with reverence, seeking to fulfill His purpose for us, and working together in unity to bring glory to His name.
