Exodus 40:25

Posted on 25 April 2025
Listen to this article

“And he lighted the lamps before the Lord; as the Lord commanded Moses.”

This verse is part of the narrative in the book of Exodus that describes the construction and dedication of the Tabernacle, which was a portable sanctuary for the Israelites during their journey in the wilderness. The Tabernacle was a central place of worship and symbolized God’s dwelling among His people.

Significance of the Lamps:The lamps mentioned here were a crucial part of the Tabernacle’s furnishings. They were placed on the golden lampstand (also known as the menorah) inside the Holy Place. The lampstand, with its seven lamps, provided light in the otherwise dark interior of the Tabernacle. This lighting symbolises God’s illumination, guidance, and presence among His people.

Divine Command and Obedience:The verse emphasises that the lighting of the lamps was done as the Lord commanded Moses. Throughout the book of Exodus, we see the importance of following God’s instructions precisely. This act of obedience by Moses and the Israelites demonstrates their commitment to honouring God’s Word and His specific directions for worship.

Spiritual Lessons:There are several spiritual lessons we can draw from this verse. First, the lamps represent the light of God’s Word and His presence in our lives. As Christians, we are called to be the light of the world, reflecting God’s truth and love to those around us (Matthew 5:14-16). Second, obedience to God’s commands is essential in our walk with Him. Just as Moses followed God’s instructions diligently, we should also strive to obey God’s Word and seek His guidance in our lives.

Application to our lives:Exodus 40:25 reminds us of the importance of seeking God’s presence and guidance in our daily lives. Through prayer, reading the Bible, and living obediently, we can maintain a close relationship with God, allowing His light to shine through us. We are called to be a living testimony to His grace and truth.

Context within Exodus 40:In Exodus 40, we see the final stage of setting up the Tabernacle. The previous verses describe how Moses assembled and anointed the Tabernacle and its furnishings, including the altar and the basin. The verse before Exodus 40:25, in particular, mentions Moses’ completion of these tasks: “Thus did Moses: according to all that the Lord commanded him, so did he.” (Exodus 40:24, KJV) This verse reinforces the theme of obedience that runs throughout the chapter and the book of Exodus as a whole.

In conclusion, Exodus 40:25 serves as a reminder of the significance of God’s presence, the importance of obedience to His commands, and the call for us to be the light of the world. By following God’s Word and seeking His presence in our lives, we can reflect His light to others and be living examples of His love and truth.
