Exodus 40:28

Posted on 25 April 2025
Listen to this article

“Thus was all the work of the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation finished: and the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so did they.”

Exodus 40:28 concludes the book of Exodus with the completion of the construction of the Tabernacle, a significant moment in the history of the Israelites. This verse highlights three key aspects that we can study:

The Tabernacle and its Significance:The "tabernacle" was a portable and temporary sanctuary that the Israelites constructed in the wilderness under the instructions of God. It was the place where God’s presence dwelt among His people, and it served as a central focus for worship and sacrifices during their journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. The Tabernacle was a foreshadowing of the temple that would be built later in Jerusalem. Its design, measurements, and construction were specified by God to Moses on Mount Sinai (Exodus 25-27). Exodus 40:17-33 describes the detailed process of setting up the Tabernacle, including the various elements like the Ark of the Covenant, the Altar, the Table, the Lampstand, etc.

Obedience to God’s Commands:The verse emphasizes that the children of Israel followed all the instructions given to them by the LORD through Moses. This obedience was crucial because God’s commands were not arbitrary; they were intended to teach the Israelites about His holiness, their relationship with Him, and how to approach Him in worship and daily living. The Israelites’ faithfulness in following God’s instructions demonstrated their trust in Him and their willingness to submit to His authority.

Spiritual Lessons for Christians:As Christians, we can draw important spiritual lessons from this passage. Just as the Tabernacle was a physical dwelling place for God’s presence, believers are now considered temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). God dwells within each believer, making our bodies His sanctuary. This reality should influence how we live our lives, making us mindful of God’s presence in all we do and encouraging us to live in obedience to His Word.

Furthermore, the obedience displayed by the children of Israel serves as a model for us. Jesus said in John 14:15, "If you love me, keep my commandments." Our love for God should lead us to follow His commands, trusting that His instructions are for our good and His glory.

In conclusion, Exodus 40:28 marks the completion of the Tabernacle’s construction, an essential place of worship and God’s presence among the Israelites. The verse highlights the Israelites’ obedience to God’s commands, setting an example for us as believers to faithfully follow God and His Word. As we recognize that we are temples of the Holy Spirit, may we live our lives in obedience to God, seeking to honour Him in all that we do.
