Exodus 6:25

Posted on 2 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And Eleazar Aaron’s son took him one of the daughters of Putiel to wife; and she bare him Phinehas: these are the heads of the fathers of the Levites according to their families.”

Context:The book of Exodus primarily focuses on the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and their journey to the Promised Land. In this particular verse, the genealogy of the Levites, who were set apart as the priestly tribe, is mentioned.

Eleazar, Aaron’s Son:Eleazar was the son of Aaron, who was the brother of Moses. Aaron played a significant role as the first high priest of Israel and the spokesperson for Moses before Pharaoh. Eleazar, as a descendant of Aaron, had a privileged position among the Levites.

Marrying a Daughter of Putiel:Eleazar took one of the daughters of Putiel as his wife. The identity of Putiel is uncertain, as he is not mentioned elsewhere in the Bible. Some scholars suggest that Putiel may have been an Egyptian, while others propose that he might have been a fellow Levite. Nevertheless, Eleazar’s marriage to a daughter of Putiel is significant because it further established the lineage of the priestly family.

Phinehas:The union between Eleazar and the daughter of Putiel resulted in the birth of Phinehas. Phinehas later became a prominent figure during the wilderness journey of the Israelites. He played a crucial role in stopping a plague that had broken out among the Israelites due to their involvement in idolatry and sexual immorality (Numbers 25:1-15). Phinehas’ zealousness for the Lord earned him a covenant of peace and an everlasting priesthood for his descendants (Numbers 25:10-13).

The Heads of the Fathers of the Levites:This verse concludes by stating that Eleazar, his wife, and their son Phinehas were the heads of the fathers of the Levites. This indicates their significant role in leading and representing the Levitical tribe, which was responsible for the religious duties and services in the tabernacle and later the temple.

Overall, Exodus 6:25 provides a glimpse into the genealogy of the Levites, with a specific focus on Eleazar and his family. It highlights the importance of the Levitical priesthood and foreshadows the future role of Phinehas in preserving the holiness and worship of God among the Israelites.
