Exodus 6:7

Listen to this article

"And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians."

Historical Context:Exodus 6:7 is part of the account of the Israelites’ deliverance from slavery in Egypt. God had chosen Moses to be His instrument in leading the Israelites out of bondage and into the Promised Land.

God’s Promise:In this verse, God makes a profound promise to the Israelites. He states that He will take them as His own people and be their God. This promise emphasizes God’s covenant relationship with the Israelites and His commitment to their well-being and protection. It signifies a special bond between God and His chosen people.

Relationship with God:By declaring, "I will be to you a God," God is inviting the Israelites into a personal and intimate relationship with Himself. This reveals His desire for a close connection with His people. He desires to guide them, provide for them, and be their source of strength and comfort. This promise assures the Israelites that they will have a unique relationship with the one true God.

Knowing the LORD:God affirms that through His actions, the Israelites will come to know Him as the LORD, their God. The events of their liberation from Egypt, the plagues, the parting of the Red Sea, and their subsequent journey through the wilderness will serve as tangible demonstrations of God’s power, faithfulness, and sovereignty. Through these experiences, the Israelites would gain a deeper understanding and knowledge of God’s character.

Deliverance from Burdens:The verse concludes by highlighting God’s intention to bring the Israelites out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. This refers to the heavy oppression and harsh treatment they endured as slaves. God’s promise to free them from these burdens not only encompasses physical liberation but also spiritual and emotional liberation from bondage. God desires to release His people from anything that hinders their true freedom and relationship with Him.

Applications:

  • Covenant Relationship: As believers today, we can take comfort in knowing that God desires a personal relationship with us. Through Jesus Christ, we have been adopted into God’s family and can experience the privileges of being His people.
  • Trust in God’s Promises: Just as God fulfilled His promise to the Israelites, we can trust that He is faithful to His promises for us. In times of difficulty or oppression, we can rely on God’s deliverance and provision.
  • Growing in Knowledge of God: We should seek to know God more intimately through His Word, prayer, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Our experiences with God and His faithfulness in our lives can deepen our understanding and knowledge of His character.
  • Freedom in Christ: Just as the Israelites were set free from their burdens, Jesus offers freedom from the burdens of sin and guilt. Through faith in Him, we can experience true liberation and live in the freedom that He provides.

Remember, studying the Bible further and exploring additional commentaries can provide deeper insights into the context, themes, and applications of Exodus 6:7.
