Exodus 6:9

Posted on 2 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And Moses spake so unto the children of Israel: but they hearkened not unto Moses for anguish of spirit, and for cruel bondage.”

Context:Exodus is the second book of the Bible and describes the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. Moses has been chosen by God to lead the Israelites out of Egypt and confront Pharaoh.

Moses’ Message:In Exodus 6:9, Moses delivers a message from God to the Israelites, informing them about the forthcoming deliverance from their bondage. Moses tells them about the promises and plans God has for their freedom. However, despite Moses’ words, the Israelites did not listen to him.

Anguish of Spirit:The verse mentions that the Israelites did not hearken to Moses “for anguish of spirit.” The Israelites were experiencing extreme suffering and hardship in their slavery in Egypt. Their spirits were broken, and they were overwhelmed with distress, which made it difficult for them to have faith and hope in Moses’ message.

Cruel Bondage:The Israelites were in cruel bondage under the oppressive rule of Pharaoh. They were subjected to harsh labor, mistreatment, and heavy burdens. The weight of their bondage made it challenging for them to receive and believe in the message of deliverance.

Lessons from Exodus 6:9:

  • The Power of Desperation:The Israelites’ anguish of spirit highlights the power of desperation. When we are in a place of deep distress, it can be difficult to receive messages of hope and deliverance. However, it is precisely in those moments that we must open ourselves to the possibility of God’s intervention and salvation.
  • God’s Faithfulness:Despite the Israelites’ lack of faith, God remained faithful to His promises. In the subsequent chapters of Exodus, God demonstrates His power through the plagues upon Egypt and eventually leads the Israelites out of slavery. This reminds us that even in our moments of doubt and despair, God is still working behind the scenes to fulfill His purposes.
  • Trusting God in Difficult Times:The Israelites’ response serves as a cautionary example. In times of hardship, it is crucial to maintain trust in God’s faithfulness and promises, even when circumstances seem bleak. God’s plans are often beyond our understanding, and He can bring deliverance even when it seems impossible.

Overall, Exodus 6:9 highlights the challenges faced by the Israelites in receiving Moses’ message of deliverance due to their anguish and cruel bondage. It also teaches us about the power of desperation, God’s faithfulness, and the importance of trusting Him even in difficult times.
