Exodus 7:1

Posted on 2 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And the Lord said unto Moses, See, I have made thee a god to Pharaoh: and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet.”

Context:The book of Exodus is the second book of the Bible and records the story of the Israelites’ liberation from slavery in Egypt. Exodus 7:1 occurs at the beginning of the account of the ten plagues that God sent upon Egypt to convince Pharaoh to let the Israelites go.

God’s Commission to Moses:In this verse, God speaks to Moses and affirms His divine appointment of Moses to confront Pharaoh. God declares, “See, I have made thee a god to Pharaoh.” This statement does not imply that Moses is divine but rather signifies that Moses would act as God’s representative or spokesperson before Pharaoh.

Moses and Aaron:God assigns Aaron, Moses’ brother, to play a significant role in the interaction with Pharaoh. Aaron would serve as Moses’ prophet, meaning he would speak on behalf of Moses, conveying the messages and instructions from God to Pharaoh.

Divine Authority:By appointing Moses as a “god” to Pharaoh, God emphasizes His supreme authority over all the earthly rulers, including Pharaoh. This highlights the power and sovereignty of God, who empowers His chosen servants to carry out His plans and purposes.

Lessons for us:

  • God’s Calling and Empowerment:Just as God called and empowered Moses for a specific task, He also has a unique plan and purpose for each individual. We can trust that when God calls us to a task, He will equip us with the necessary abilities and resources to fulfill His will.
  • God’s Authority:The encounter between Moses, Aaron, and Pharaoh demonstrates that no earthly power or ruler can stand against the authority of God. It reminds us that God is ultimately in control, and His plans will prevail, regardless of the opposition we may face.
  • Importance of Faithful Messengers:Aaron’s role as a prophet to Moses illustrates the significance of having faithful messengers in God’s work. We should be willing to support and encourage others who have been called by God, recognizing the value of teamwork and collaboration in fulfilling God’s purposes.
  • Humility and Dependence:Despite being appointed as God’s representative, Moses remained humble, recognizing that he was not divine. This teaches us the importance of humility and acknowledging our dependence on God as we serve Him.

Overall, Exodus 7:1 highlights the divine appointment of Moses as God’s representative to Pharaoh, emphasizing God’s authority and His ability to accomplish His plans through chosen individuals. It encourages us to trust in God’s calling, rely on His power, and remain humble as we fulfill the tasks He assigns to us.
