Exodus 7:17

Listen to this article

“Thus saith the Lord, In this thou shalt know that I am the Lord: behold, I will smite with the rod that is in mine hand upon the waters which are in the river, and they shall be turned to blood.”

Exodus 7:17 is part of the narrative of the Ten Plagues that God sent upon Egypt during the time of Moses to secure the release of the Israelites from their bondage. In this verse, God is speaking to Moses, relaying His message to Pharaoh.

Context:Prior to this verse, God had commanded Moses to go to Pharaoh and demand the release of the Israelites. However, Pharaoh refused to listen, and as a result, God began to demonstrate His power through a series of miraculous plagues.

Divine Authority:The verse begins with “Thus saith the Lord,” indicating that the following message is directly from God Himself. It emphasizes God’s authority and sovereignty over all creation, including Pharaoh and the waters of the Nile.

Proof of God’s Power:God tells Moses that through the use of the rod in His hand, He will smite the waters of the river, turning them into blood. This plague was intended to serve as a sign and proof of God’s power to both Pharaoh and the Israelites. It was a clear demonstration that God had control over nature and could manipulate it according to His will.

Symbolism:The act of turning the water into blood carries symbolic significance. In Egyptian culture, the Nile River was revered as a life-giving source of water, and its annual flooding played a vital role in their agricultural system. By transforming the Nile into blood, God was challenging the authority and power of the Egyptian gods, particularly Hapi, the god of the Nile. It revealed the futility of their false gods and demonstrated that the true God, Yahweh, had power over all creation.

Purpose:The purpose of this plague, like the subsequent plagues, was to compel Pharaoh to release the Israelites. Additionally, it served as a judgment against the oppressive and idolatrous nation of Egypt. God used these plagues to reveal His supremacy and to demonstrate His faithfulness to His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Spiritual Lesson:Exodus 7:17 also holds a spiritual lesson for us today. It reminds us that God is the ultimate authority and ruler over all things. His power is unmatched, and He can perform miracles that defy natural laws. It encourages us to trust in God’s sovereignty and His ability to intervene in our lives. Additionally, it teaches us that false gods and idols are powerless before the one true God.

In summary, Exodus 7:17 highlights God’s authority, power, and sovereignty over creation. It demonstrates His ability to perform miracles and reveals the futility of false gods. This verse serves as a reminder for us to trust in God’s sovereignty and to recognize His unmatched power in our lives.
