Exodus 7:23

Posted on 2 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And Pharaoh turned and went into his house, neither did he set his heart to this also.”

Context:Exodus 7 is part of the narrative of Moses and Aaron’s confrontation with Pharaoh to demand the release of the Israelites from their bondage in Egypt. In this chapter, God performs various signs and wonders through Moses and Aaron to demonstrate His power and authority over Pharaoh and the Egyptian gods.

Pharaoh’s Response:In verse 22, we see that despite Moses and Aaron performing a miraculous sign by turning the waters of Egypt into blood, Pharaoh’s heart remained hardened, and he did not respond favourably to their request to let the Israelites go. Instead, Pharaoh turned and went into his house, disregarding the significance of the miracle he had witnessed.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • Hardened Heart:Pharaoh’s response highlights the condition of a hardened heart. Despite witnessing a supernatural event, he chose to ignore the message and continued in his stubbornness. It serves as a reminder that sometimes individuals can witness or experience God’s power and yet remain resistant to His will. This teaches us the importance of having a humble and open heart towards God’s revelation.
  • Ignoring God’s Signs:Pharaoh’s lack of response demonstrates the danger of ignoring the signs and wonders that God performs. The transformation of the Nile River into blood was a clear demonstration of God’s authority and ability to bring about judgment. However, Pharaoh’s indifference reveals the consequences of disregarding God’s warnings and refusing to acknowledge His power.
  • The Persistence of God’s Message:Despite Pharaoh’s initial rejection, God did not give up on His plan to deliver the Israelites. The subsequent plagues and signs that follow in the book of Exodus reveal God’s determination to fulfil His promises and bring His people out of Egypt. It demonstrates God’s faithfulness and patience, even in the face of human resistance.

Application:

  • Responsive Heart:As we study Pharaoh’s response, we should examine our own hearts. Are we open to God’s leading, or do we harden our hearts and resist His will? It is crucial for us to cultivate a soft and responsive heart, always willing to listen to God’s voice and obey His commands.
  • Recognising God’s Signs:God continues to work in our lives and reveal Himself through various signs and wonders. It is important for us to be attentive and discerning, recognising His presence and responding to His messages. Let us not overlook or dismiss the ways in which God communicates with us.
  • Trusting in God’s Persistence:Just as God remained faithful to His promises in delivering the Israelites, we can trust that He is committed to fulfilling His plans for our lives. Even when we face challenges or encounter resistance, we can have confidence in God’s persistence and His ability to overcome any obstacle.

Remember, Exodus 7:23 reminds us of the significance of having a responsive heart, recognising God’s signs, and trusting in His persistence. By studying and applying these lessons, we can grow in our relationship with God and align our lives with His purposes.
