Exodus 7:3

Posted on 2 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and multiply my signs and my wonders in the land of Egypt.”

Context:The book of Exodus recounts the story of the Israelites’ deliverance from slavery in Egypt. Moses and Aaron were chosen by God to confront Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt, and demand the release of the Israelites. In Exodus 7:3, God speaks to Moses about what He will do in the upcoming interactions with Pharaoh.

God’s Purpose:In this verse, God declares His intention to harden Pharaoh’s heart. This statement may seem puzzling or even troubling at first glance. However, it is essential to understand God’s purpose behind this action. God’s plan was to display His power and sovereignty through a series of miraculous signs and wonders, not only for the liberation of His people but also to reveal Himself to the Egyptians as the one true God.

Hardening of Pharaoh’s Heart:The hardening of Pharaoh’s heart refers to his stubbornness and resistance to letting the Israelites go. It is important to note that the hardening of Pharaoh’s heart was a result of his own choices and actions as well as God’s intervention. Throughout the narrative, we see instances where Pharaoh hardens his own heart before God does. However, God also plays a role in solidifying Pharaoh’s heart in order to fulfill His divine purpose.

God’s Signs and Wonders:Alongside the hardening of Pharaoh’s heart, God promises to multiply His signs and wonders in the land of Egypt. These signs and wonders are a manifestation of God’s power, designed to bring about the release of the Israelites and demonstrate His supremacy over the Egyptian gods. Through miraculous events such as turning the Nile into blood, the plague of frogs, and the parting of the Red Sea, God reveals His authority and establishes His name among the people.

Lessons for Today:

  • God’s Sovereignty:Exodus 7:3 reminds us of God’s sovereignty over the hearts of individuals and His ability to fulfill His purposes, even in the face of opposition. It teaches us to trust in God’s plan and timing, even when circumstances seem challenging or perplexing.
  • God’s Power and Signs:The signs and wonders performed by God in Egypt point to His unmatched power and authority. Today, we can find encouragement in knowing that the same God who performed miraculous acts in the past is still capable of working miracles in our lives.
  • Human Responsiveness:Pharaoh’s response to God’s signs and wonders shows the importance of our own responsiveness to God’s call. We should strive to have a humble and receptive heart, open to God’s leading and obedient to His will.

Remember that studying the Bible requires examining the context, seeking additional insights from related passages, and considering historical and cultural backgrounds. It’s always beneficial to explore commentaries or consult with spiritual leaders to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the text.
