Exodus 9:15

Listen to this article

“For now I will stretch out my hand, that I may smite thee and thy people with pestilence; and thou shalt be cut off from the earth.”

Context:The book of Exodus recounts the story of the Israelites’ liberation from slavery in Egypt. This verse is part of the narrative where God sends a series of plagues upon the Egyptians as a judgment for their refusal to let the Israelites go. The specific plague mentioned here is a pestilence, or a severe epidemic disease.

God’s Judgment:In this verse, God declares His intention to bring a devastating plague upon Pharaoh and his people. It highlights God’s power and authority over all creation. The purpose of these plagues was to demonstrate God’s supremacy, to punish the Egyptians for their oppression of the Israelites, and to compel Pharaoh to release the Israelites from slavery.

Divine Intervention:By saying, “I will stretch out my hand,” God is proclaiming His direct involvement in the events unfolding in Egypt. It shows that God’s hand is not short to save His people, and He is actively working to fulfill His purposes. This phrase also implies that God has the power to bring judgment upon the Egyptians swiftly and decisively.

Consequences of Disobedience:The phrase “thou shalt be cut off from the earth” indicates the severity of the coming judgment. God’s purpose was not only to punish Pharaoh and the Egyptians but also to make it evident to them that their actions had dire consequences. It serves as a warning that disobedience and oppression ultimately lead to destruction.
