Exodus 9:21

Posted on 3 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And he that regarded not the word of the LORD left his servants and his cattle in the field.”

Context:The book of Exodus records the account of the Israelites’ liberation from slavery in Egypt. In this particular chapter, God sends a series of plagues upon Egypt to demonstrate His power and to compel Pharaoh to release the Israelites.

Pharaoh’s Response:Prior to the verse in question, Moses warns Pharaoh about an impending plague of hail, advising him to bring his servants, livestock, and everything in the field to safety. However, some people did not heed Moses’ warning and left their servants and cattle in the field.

Disobedience and Consequences:Exodus 9:21 highlights the consequences of disregarding God’s word. Those who did not take heed and ignored the warning suffered the loss of their servants and cattle. This verse emphasizes the importance of obedience to God’s instructions and the consequences that can result from disobedience.

Spiritual Application:

  • The verse carries a broader spiritual lesson for us today. It serves as a reminder that God’s word is to be taken seriously, and disregarding it can lead to negative consequences. Just as the people who left their servants and cattle in the field faced the loss, when we neglect or disobey God’s commands, we may experience unfavourable outcomes in our lives.
  • Importance of Obedience: Throughout the Bible, we see the theme of obedience emphasised. Obedience to God’s word is essential for our spiritual growth and relationship with Him. Jesus Himself said, “If you love me, keep my commands” (John 14:15, NIV). Obedience demonstrates our trust and submission to God, and it aligns us with His will for our lives.
  • God’s Faithfulness and Warnings: In the story of Exodus, God faithfully warned Pharaoh and the Egyptians about the plagues that were to come. He provided an opportunity for them to respond and make the necessary preparations. However, those who ignored God’s word faced the consequences of their actions. Similarly, God warns us through His Word and the conviction of the Holy Spirit. It is crucial for us to pay attention and respond in obedience to His warnings and instructions.

Reflection and Application:As we consider Exodus 9:21, let us reflect on our own lives. Are there areas where we have disregarded God’s word or neglected to obey His commands? If so, it is important for us to confess our disobedience, seek God’s forgiveness, and strive to align our lives with His will. Let us be diligent in studying the Scriptures, listening to the prompting of the Holy Spirit, and faithfully obeying God’s word.
