“The princes also of Pharaoh saw her, and commended her before Pharaoh: and the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house.”
This verse is part of the narrative of Abram (later known as Abraham) and his journey to Egypt during a time of famine. Let’s delve into the context and significance of this passage.
In Genesis 12, we find that Abram, along with his wife Sarai (later known as Sarah) and his nephew Lot, left their homeland of Ur and journeyed to the land of Canaan. However, as they entered Canaan, they encountered a severe famine. In response, Abram made the decision to go down to Egypt temporarily until the famine subsided.
As they approached Egypt, Abram became concerned about the beauty of his wife, Sarai, and worried that the Egyptians might kill him to take her for themselves. He instructed Sarai to pretend to be his sister instead of his wife, in order to protect him. Unfortunately, this plan backfired.
In verse 15, we learn that when the princes, or officials, of Pharaoh saw Sarai, they were captivated by her beauty and spoke well of her to Pharaoh. Consequently, Sarai was taken into Pharaoh’s house. This turn of events occurred because Abram had portrayed Sarai as his sister, which created an opportunity for Pharaoh to take her into his royal household.
This incident raises ethical and moral questions, as Abram’s deception put Sarai in a compromising position. It also shows the consequences of resorting to dishonesty and compromise when facing difficulties.
However, despite Abram’s misguided actions, God’s plan and protection are evident in the subsequent verses. In the following chapter, Genesis 12:17-20, we read that God afflicted Pharaoh and his household with plagues because of Sarai’s presence. Recognizing that Sarai was actually Abram’s wife, Pharaoh confronted Abram and sent them away with their possessions and allowed them to continue their journey.
This incident serves as a reminder of God’s sovereignty and faithfulness, even in the midst of human failings. God’s protective hand was evident in delivering Abram and Sarai from a potentially dangerous situation.
