Genesis 15:11

Posted on 19 July 2023
Listen to this article

“And when the fowls came down upon the carcasses, Abram drove them away.”

Context:The verse is part of a significant event in Abram’s (later known as Abraham) life when God made a covenant with him. In Genesis 15, God promises Abram numerous descendants and the possession of the land. Abram expresses his concern about the lack of a heir, and God reassures him of His faithfulness.

Symbolism:In this particular verse, Abram is depicted driving away the fowls that descended upon the carcasses. Symbolically, the fowls represent unclean or impure forces or influences that could threaten the fulfilment of God’s promises. Abram’s action of driving them away signifies his commitment to protect and guard the covenant promises from any interference or corruption.

Historical and Cultural Context:The act of driving away the fowls from the carcasses was a significant ritual in ancient Near Eastern covenant‑making practices. It involved the parties involved in the covenant walking between the divided carcasses of sacrificial animals, symbolizing the consequences of breaking the covenant. The act of driving away the birds indicated the commitment to maintain the covenant’s integrity.

Faithfulness and Protection:Abram’s actions demonstrate his faithfulness and commitment to protecting the covenant that God made with him. As believers, we can draw inspiration from Abram’s dedication and apply it to our own lives. We should be vigilant in safeguarding our relationship with God and protecting the promises He has made to us.

Guarding Against Corruption:The fowls symbolize impure influences that could hinder our spiritual growth and distract us from God’s plan. We should actively drive away these negative influences from our lives, whether they are sinful habits, unhealthy relationships, or negative thought patterns. Just as Abram protected the covenant promises, we should be proactive in protecting our faith and keeping our hearts and minds focused on God.

Trusting in God’s Faithfulness:Abram’s concern about not having an heir is met with reassurance from God. We can learn from Abram’s example and trust in God’s faithfulness to fulfil His promises in our lives. Even when circumstances seem uncertain or impossible, we can have faith that God is faithful and will bring His plans to fruition in His perfect timing.

Genesis 15:11 presents a powerful image of Abram’s commitment to protecting the covenant promises. By studying this verse, we can gain insights into faithfulness, protection, and trust in God’s faithfulness, and apply these lessons to our own lives as we journey with God.
